Tiger Boys Down Marion
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
In a game that could be described in one word as physical, 23rd-year Warsaw coach Al Rhodes was more concerned with his team's mental toughness Saturday against Marion.
One night after falling in double overtime at Northern Lakes Conference opponent Elkhart Memorial, the Class 4A No. 7 Tigers came back and shortened the Giants 74-64 in a game that saw an obscene getsture by a player, an object thrown on the floor and a scuffle under the basket that had to be broken up by officials.
"I was very pleased from the mental standpoint," said Rhodes after picking up his 399th career win. "I wondered if we would be tired after we lost in double overtime at Memorial. We have strong, physical kids on our team, I was more concered with the mental side."
Despite trailing by as much as 10, Marion made a game of it in the fourth quarter, taking a 53-52 lead and then only trailing 68-64 when senior Kyle Owensby made a steal and lay up with 52 seconds remaining.
Much like Memorial did to Warsaw the night before, the Tigers stretched the game out with free throws down the stretch.
For the game, Warsaw was 30 of 41 at the charity stripe, while Marion was just 6 of 14. The visiting Giants were whistled for 27 fouls to the Tigers' 14.
With the win, Warsaw, which had its 14-game win streak stopped Friday night, improves to 15-2 on the year. Marion, now losers in six of its last seven games, fell to 9-8.
"When looking at Marion's record, you might not think they're very good," Rhodes said. "But they are very good. A lot of their losses came in the North Central Conference, where basketball is very good. Fortunately, we had a lot of respect for them."
The teams went back and forth early until the Tigers pulled away 31-21 midway through the second stanza, due in large part to Marion putting Warsaw at the free throw line.
After leading 37-33 at halftime, the Tigers opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run, capped off by a Greg Clay dunk to take a 12-point lead.
Over the next four minutes Marion outscored Warsaw 14-2 to knot the game at 47.
Much of the Giants' offense in that span came from Owensby, who finished with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Seniors Jake Stambazze and Isaac McClung finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Allen Miller, Marion's leading scorer, and 6-foot-9 center Kevin Cates, the Giants' third leading scorer, were held to six points each. Miller came in averaging 17 points per contest.
"We got big games from Chris and Greg Clay in terms of scoring," Rhodes said. "But what I thought was big in the game was defense and rebounding. Ryan DeGeeter did a nice job on Cates, not letting him get to the blocks."
Chris Clay led the Tigers, who outrebounded Marion 31-22, with 27 points. Twin brother Greg added 20, while Jerad Shaw added 10 points and nine rebounds and DeGeeter and Brad Seiss eight points each.
The Tigers will be in action again Thursday when they host NLC foe Plymouth, as Rhodes goes for his 400th career win.
"I hope the kids will feel a sense of urgency to improve with only four weeks left," Rhodes said. "At this point in the season most teams have stopped improving, most teams have peaked. I don't believe we've peaked yet."

Warsaw Relay Team Advances To State, Breaks School Record
By Mike Madison, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
Nine teams showed up Saturday for the IHSAA girls swim sectional but it wouldn't have taken too much time going over the seedings to realize that Plymouth and Bremen would be the runaway favorites for the title.
While those kind of things sometime don't work out, on this day they did. The Bremen Lions literally ran off with the title with 274 points while Plymouth was not far behind with 255. Wawasee took third with 219 and the Tigers were fourth with 143. After Warsaw it was Culver Girls Academy, Huntington North, Tippecanoe Valley, Rochester, and Manchester.
Because of Thursday's ice storm the preliminaries were pushed back a day to Friday night, meaning the girl's had to swim their best that evening in hopes of making the finals. Then they would have to swim again Saturday.
Like most championship meets, the key to success is often the prelims. The top six times from Friday's prelims advanced to the championship heat on Saturday, while the next six times competed in the consolation heat. Those in the championship heat could finish no lower than sixth while those in the consolation heat could finish no higher than seventh on Saturday. The key for any team is to get as many swimmers as possible into Saturday's finals. It can also be the downfall of a team as it nearly was for the Tigers.
Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said, "Our 200-medley relay team false-started (Friday) night so that hurt. That's a little frustrating and I think that was part of the reason we didn't swim as well (Friday) night as we had hoped. After that, everyone was a little down. We could have done a little better but in the grand scheme of things we weren't going to win it and we knew that coming in because it was going to be Bremen and Plymouth. They were so deep."
While the Tigers didn't swim well Friday night, they came back with some good performances on Saturday, the highlight being the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Claire Beckett, Andrea Heyde, Laura Noggle and Aislinn Ummer.
The Tiger team not only won, it set a new school record with a time of 1:46.39. The win qualifies the team for a trip to the state final prelims Friday evening.
"I was really excited on how we swam today," said Aukeman, "The best thing is that we have our 200 freestyle relay team going to state on Friday. We broke the school record today, we broke it last year and broke it again today. I felt like we swam well across the board today. I was really happy."
While Steve Doerscher and his Tippecanoe Valley team finished down from their third place ranking last year, he was happy with Saturday's swims.
"Overall I was very pleased. We had a couple of disappointing swims. Its just one of those things, when you try real hard, sometimes things don't work out. We had one of our best times out of our relay and Elyse Boggs has had shoulder problems all year came back and had a real nice swim in the 500."
Another happy coach was Wawasee's Roger Karns as his Warriors finished third.
"I thought we swam very well today," said Karns. "To come in third in this tough of a field was great."
There was another thing that made Karns happy Saturday.
"Our freshman and sophomores scored a lot of points today and that is exciting for the future of our program."
In the 100-yard backstroke, Warrior freshman Lisa Gunderson came in third, while sophomores Liz White and Libby Brown were fourth and sixth. Brown also finished fourth in the diving while fellow sophomore Megan Medlock took fifth and freshman Jennifer Sands was sixth. Brown's fourth place finish qualified her for the diving regionals at Kokomo on Tuesday night.
Individual championship swims for area girls were: in the 200-yard freestyle, Diane Jackson of Wawasee finished fourth.
Wawasee's Sarah Jane Hoffman finished fifth in the 200-yard IM. In the 50-yard freestyle Claire Beckett finished third for Warsaw as Wawasee's Sarah Marty came in fourth and Valley's Elyse Boggs took sixth.
In the 100-yard butterfly Marty from Wawasee finished fourth. In the 100-yard freestyle Alyssa Anglin from Valley finished fourth. In the 500-yard freestyle Boggs from Valley took fourth and Warsaw's Laura Noggle was fifth.
In the 100-yard backstroke Wawasee went 3-4-6 behind Gunderson, White, and Brown. In the 100-yard breaststroke it was Tiger freshman Amanda Brown taking third with Wawasee's Laura MacOwan and Sarah-Jane Hoffman placing fifth and sixth.
Six Area Wrestliers Advance From Goshen Regional
By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
At the Goshen Wrestling Regional six area wrestlers qualified to advance to the semistate competition at Fort Wayne, including four from Warsaw and one each from Tippecanoe Valley and Triton.
Jacob Boots of Warsaw came up with the best finish, taking second place at 215 pounds. All of the other area semistate qualifiers had third-place finishes at Goshen.
WARSAW
Sophomore Jacob Boots (215) continues his season after taking runner-up honors. In his opening match Boots pinned Phillip Walter of Bremen in 5:09. Boots then avenged his regular season loss to Elkhart Memorial's Sam Mayo, 2-1, in the semi-finals. Each wrestler scored an escape, but Boots was also awarded a penalty point when Mayo was charged with "fleeing the mat."
Goshen's Joe Piwoszkin would be the opponent for Boots in the finals. At the end of the second period Boots was down 9-2. Although he came back strong in the third period, scoring two takedowns, it would not be enough as Piwoszkin went on to record the 16-6 victory. Boots will take a season record of 23-12 to the semistate at the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum.
Also earning a trip to Fort Wayne for Warsaw were three third place finishers: Tanner Connealy, Kyle Boley, and Tyler Miller.
Connealy (125) first pinned Jason Hochstetler of NorthWood and then lost an 11-6 decision to eventual champion Shane Perkey of Jimtown. In the consolation round Connealy took third place and upped his season record to 24-10 by beating Nate Gautsche of Goshen, 7-5.
At 135 pounds, Boley's two pins earned him advancement to the semistate. Boley pinned Paul Gordon of Prairie Heights at 3:29 in round one. After a 4-0 loss to Dillon Whitacre of NorthWood, Boley surprised Jimtown senior, Aaron McCuddy, smothering him with a fall at 1:27. Sophomore Boley makes his second trip to the semistate and improves his season record to 28-9.
Miller (189) heads to the Coliseum with a season record of 21-10 after taking third place. In the opening round Miller pinned Angola's Alan Hawkins in 5:16. Twice during the season Miller defeated Goshen's Dan Laughlin, but in the semi-final round, the Goshen junior managed to battle out a 4-2 overtime victory. Miller kept his hopes alive by scoring taking two takedowns Randy Mitschelen of NorthWood for a 4-1 win for his third-place finish.
Other Warsaw wrestlers were ousted from the running after first round losses. Brandon Cordell (145) lost his opening match 13-6 to NorthWood's Brandon Garner, who went on to win the championship. Matt Palladino (130) was eliminated in Round one when he was the victim of a fall at the hands of Troy Swindeman who wound up taking first place. David Ferguson (275) also lost his opening match to an eventual champion when he was pinned by Preston Morris of Elkhart Central.
Anthony Boley was a sectional champion at 119 pounds, but did not compete in the regional due to a concussion suffered earlier in the week. Boley concluded his senior season with a record of 29-6.
TIPPECANOE VALLEY
The Vikings had six representatives at the Goshen Regional. Jake Long (171) took a third place to qualify for semistate. He first beat Jeremiah Swartzell of Elkhart Memorial, but lost to Caleb Coblentz of Goshen. In the consolation round Long defeated Dave Britten of Bremen by a score of 12-5, although the official scorer incorrectly posted the result as only 7-5, having neglected to record a final takedown and nearfall.
Other Valley wrestlers were ousted in round one losses: Brad Bauters (103), Matt Manns (112), Kevin Day (145), and Chris Hurd (160).
TRITON
Errik Lemler (130) was the only Triton wrestler to advance to the semistate. He first pinned Bryan Wallace of Elkhart Central in 2:44 and then lost to NorthWood's Troy Cox, 17-9.
Lemler came back in the consolation match to overcome Derrick Laurion, 7-1. Lemler now has only two losses this season, as he heads to Fort Wayne. Along with the loss to Cox, Jimtown's Troy Swindeman, the regional champion, had bested him earlier in the season.
Justin Scott (103) and Tate Chapman (152) both lost in the first round.
In the semistate competition all third place regional finishers will have first round matches against second place finishers from other regionals while regional champions will enjoy first round byes. None of the wrestlers from any of the four teams at the Warsaw Sectional was able to take a championship at the Goshen Regional. Even Plymouth, which sent eleven to the regional, came away with only four qualifying for the semistate: one runner-up and three others who had third place finishes.
So, the next event for these six area wrestlers is the New Haven Semistate, conducted on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum in the Fort Wayne.

Five Wawasee Wrestlers Advance To Semistate
By Mike Madison, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
FORT WAYNE -ÊNot many people expected Wawasee coach Kevin Taylor and the Warrior wrestling team to get as far as they did this year. Not only did they finish the regular season with just two dual-meet losses, but they finished the NLC with a perfect 7-0 record.
At the East Noble sectional last week, the Warriors won and advanced 11 wrestlers to the IHSAA individual regional at Carroll High School Saturday.
Only team regional champion Columbia City had more wrestlers qualify to the individual regional. The Eagles had an amazing 14 wrestlers, one representative in each weight class.
The Warriors began the day with 11 wrestlers, and five of them advanced to the semistate. Three of those five Warriors are champions.
"It was a good day for us," said Taylor. "I thought if we wrestled well we might get six through. I thought German (Vallejo) had a chance if he wrestled well but he is still going as an alternate. Overall, I thought we did very well. You have to be pleased when you have three champions."
Advancing for the Warriors are Eracleo Vallejo who won the 112-pound weight class. Mike Hanlin finished third at 140-pounds.
Josh Roa remained undefeated for the season as he won the 145-pound class
Grant Gibson extended his record to 32-2 with a win in the 152-pound class, and Trevor Brown will advance with a third-place finish in the 160-pound weight class.
"I was really happy with three champions," said Taylor. "It's a big advantage to go to semistate as a champion because they will get a bye in the first round and they only have to have one win to advance to state."
The second and third place wrestlers from the four regionals that feed to Fort Wayne will wrestle against each other in the semistate. The four winners are then matched up in round two against the four regional winners.
The regional winners receive a bye in the first round of the semistate. Those winning in the second round will automatically advance to state as one of the top four wrestlers.
Vallejo, Hanlin, and Roa all will be making return trips to the semistate as they each qualified last year. Roa qualified for state last year and finished eighth.
"If our guys go down and get to business and wrestle well, they all have a chance to advance to state," said Taylor. "It will take smart wrestling with no mistakes, but I think they all have the opportunity to make it to Indy."
