Tiger Boys Cagers Sting Gary Wallace Hornets

By DALE HUBLER, Times-Union Sports Writer-

A night several students in the cheer block wore superhero attire, it was Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team that looked worthy of wearing capes Friday.

Behind a balanced scoring attack, passing that led to extremely high-percentage shots, and a dominating performance on the boards, the Tigers manhandled visiting Gary Wallace 74-48.

Other than a stretch in the second half when he cleared his bench, it looked as if Doug Ogle's Tigers could do no wrong, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and leading by as much as 31, 48-17, early in the third quarter.

"We've been concentrating on our positioning for defensive rebounds and offensive rebounds," Ogle said. "That showed up tonight. I thought both Michael Moore and Adam Griggs in the first half were just impressive. Michael Moore playing point guard in the way he did tonight makes us a very good basketball team. When he penetrates and passes so well we get quality shots."

A group Ogle described prior to the season as a good passing team, the Tigers certainly were Friday night.

Time after time Moore and Co. made passes that led to wide open shots, and it was the Gary Wallace Hornets that got stung.

"This is kind of what we've been waiting for as far as our passing ability," Ogle said. "We've had some good passes in games this year but didn't finish as many plays as we did tonight. Wallace was 3-1 coming in. For us to have control of the game as quickly as we did was a pleasant surprise. It was gratifying to get the non-starters so many minutes tonight."

Getting the chance to play more minutes tonight, the Tiger bench made the most of the opportunity, scoring 30 points.

Twelve Tigers saw varsity action Friday, 11 of them scored.

Friday's performance was arguably the best all-around team effort Warsaw has turned in this year.

"We've got a lot of good skilled players with unity," Ogle said. "When the fans in the Tiger Den see such unselfish play, that's fun to watch, and it sets a good example for younger players when we're more concerned about winning than individual statistics."

Senior starters Todd Braddock and Adam Griggs led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points each, while 6-foot-8 classmate Greg Allison came of the bench with a career high 12 points and six rebounds.

Led by Braddock's seven boards, Warsaw outrebounded the Hornets 41-19. Dan Gensinger and Moore added five rebounds each, while Ryan Schultz and Michael Wienhorst had four caroms each.

Gary Wallace scored the first basket of the game, but the Tigers came back with a 12-0 run and eventually led 22-8 after the first quarter behind a 9-of-13 shooting performance from the field. The Hornets were just 4 of 15 from the floor in the first quarter.

The story was similar in the second stanza as Warsaw continued its hot shooting and led 42-15 at halftime.

Through 16 minutes of action the Tigers were 16 of 25 from the field, while Wallace was a subpar 7 of 29.

"We were shooting a lot of layups or wide open shots," Ogle said, noting that it all went back to the Tigers' passing abilities. "We shot a lot better tonight than we did last weekend."

Warsaw finished the game 26 of 45 (57.7 percent) from the field, while the Hornets struggled shooting the ball and went 20 of 58 (34.5 percent) from the floor.

Wienhorst added eight points for the Tigers, while Moore scored seven and dished out eight assists. Schultz scored five, while Mark Sherman, Andrew Holladay and Nelson Conley scored three each, Gensinger two and John-Wesley Maierle one.

The win improved Warsaw to 4-1 on the season and was the third straight for the Tigers. Gary Wallace fell to 3-2.

The Hornets were led in the scoring column by senior Terry Polk's 16 points, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter. Terrell Bess added nine for Gary Wallace, while Julius Hollis had eight, Joe Lumpkin six, Kenny Jackson five and Chris Taylor four.

The Tigers are in action again tonight at Penn.
