Thrilling Finish At Regional...

Schram's eagle putt, 5th-man tiebreaker lead Warsaw to title

The thrilling finish to Thursday’s regional at Stonehenge, one that gave the Warsaw Tigers their third title in four years, is a story that coach Ben Barkey said will be told for years to come.
Words, however, will probably never do senior Jon Schram’s  20-foot eagle putt on No. 18 proper justice.
“It was like a half-court shot at the buzzer (in basketball),” said Barkey, whose 10th-ranked Tigers tied the Triton Trojans at 305 but won via a fifth-man tiebreaker. “I’ve seen a lot of cool things – Jake Brodhead’s 64 at Maplecrest, Jon Clevenger’s hole-in-one at state, Tyler Ostrom winning state, winning state as a team – but in terms of emotions, that was the coolest thing. That was awesome.”
The top three teams, as well as the top five individuals not on an advancing team, qualified for the 36-hole state finals Tuesday and Wednesday at The Legends in Franklin.
While Schram’s eagle putt allowed the Tigers to tie Triton, Will Petro’s 82 gave Warsaw the win.
The Trojans’ fifth man, Greg Music, carded a 93.
“It’s a little tough to swallow,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter, who was overcome with joy that his team advanced to state, but disappointed his team played the role of bridesmaid yet again. “We were right on Warsaw’s heels, just once I’d like to be ahead of them.”
Counting Thursday’s regional and the previous two sectionals, Triton has lost to Warsaw twice on a tiebreaker and once by a stroke.
“There’s a mutual respect between us and Triton,” said Barkey. “I’m happy we won and that we’re going back to state, and I’m happy Triton will be there too. We’ve had some great battles with Triton. If golf was a class sport, Triton would be a 1A powerhouse. They’re good.”
Bishop Dwenger finished third at 309 and grabbled the final qualifying spot.
Carroll was fourth, one stroke behind Dwenger in the 18-team field, while Fairfield (313), NorthWood (314), Columbia City (317), Homestead (317), Penn (318) and Mishawaka Marian (319) rounded out the top 10.
Schram’s 2-under 69 earned him medalist honors, as he finished one stroke ahead of Triton’s Quentyn Carpenter, who will be his roommate at Ball State University next year, East Noble’s Michael Sharp and Marian’s Michael Makris.
Schram, the last Warsaw golfer on the course, said he was aware of what was on the line when he stepped up to the 18th hole.
“Coach Barkey told me it was up to me,” said Schram. “The adrenaline kicked in. Each shot played out how I wanted it to.”
After a 300-yard drive, Schram used a 6-iron from about 210 yards out and put it about 20 feet from the cup.
With a gallery gathered to watch the finish, Schram sank the eagle putt and sent the Tigers and their fans into a frenzied celebration.
“My hands were trembling,” Schram said of the putt. “I have no idea how I hit the ball. The regional title is a pretty big deal for us. We still would have moved on, but finishing second we would have had a bitter taste in our mouth when we got to state. Of course I would have loved to win four regionals, but I’ll take three.”
Warsaw has advanced to state in eight of the 11 years Barkey has coached the Tigers.
To go with Schram’s 69 and Petro’s tiebreaking 82, the Tigers also got a 75 from Evan Cultice, an 80 from Tim Ahlersmeyer and an 81 from Jonny Hollar.
Cultice shot five strokes better than his average and tied a school record for an 18-hole round with just 23 putts.
“He has that ability,” Barkey said of Cultice’s round. “It’s just finding that belief, confidence, whatever you want to call it. To put up some really great rounds the last three weeks is great. He’s played really well the last month.”
Triton was led by Carpenter’s 70 and Ryan Rapp’s 71.
Other scores for Triton included Tanner Shepherd’s 81,  Lucas Shafer’s 83 and Music’s 93.
“I’m really happy for my No. 1 and No. 2,” Carpenter said of his son and Rapp, who won last week’s sectional with a 69. “For them to finish their careers at state, I’m tickled to death. I wish we could have gotten over the hump, but we’re going to state, that’s alright too. It’s a lot more fun to take the whole team.”
The Trojans are making just their second appearance at state as a team.
Advancing as individuals are Sharp, Makris, Northridge’s Will Erekson (71), Heritage’s Carter Dornseif (71) and Carroll’s Stephen Shupert (72).
Wawasee’s Jeffrey Moore played at the regional as an individual and carded an 80.
