During the past week, two attempted thefts were reported at Warsaw convenience stores.

The first incident, at 4:06 a.m. Jan. 21, was at the Village Pantry, 400 S. Buffalo St.

A clerk reported a male subject entered the store, used the restroom, and deliberately filled it with paper to disable the toilet.

When reported, the female clerk went to inspect the problem, but was instead confined to the restroom. During that time, two other suspects entered the store and removed cigarettes from behind the counter. The clerk was able to leave the restroom and chase the subjects out of the parking lot. She was able to identify all three on the store's security video.

Warsaw police officers tracked footprints in the snow to a residence on South High Street. Numerous persons were in the home, including the three from the store. Also found were the stolen cigarettes.

Taken into custody were a 15-year-old female, a 16-year-old male and an 18-year-old male, Ryan E. Snyder of Etna Green. All admitted their involvement in the theft when interviewed by police.

A similar incident occurred late Thursday night at the "Good To Go" BP station, 625 S. Buffalo St.

A clerk there indicated that a group entered the store, went to the bathroom, and reported it disabled. However, in this incident the clerk did not leave the counter or check on the complaint. An investigation into this incident is still pending.[[In-content Ad]]The juveniles involved were released to their parents, pending notification of the Kosciusko County Probation Department.

Snyder was charged with theft and false reporting and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail. Possible charges of criminal confinement are also being considered.
