Last week I was given the opportunity to work at an area health care facility. Being a registered nurse, it was the right thing to do.

Mid-shift, a co-worker threatened me with bodily harm. Surprised?

When asked to assist me with an elderly arthritic gentleman in a wheelchair in Infection Isolation, she refused to help lift, toilet and position appropriately. The door to the room was closed; the patient confused ... who would witness her verbal assault? "Get up in my face and you'll be on the ground," was the phrase delivered with gusto as she left, slamming the door. So he and I struggled together to get ready for lunch.

I find that her intent was not patient care, but patient neglect and endangerment. This is followed by persecution of health professionals concerned about safety. Which leads where? For hours subjected to continuous harassment, I would not abandon my patient-clients. Truly, practice differs from theory; but some corners cannot be cut. No matter what.

Please visit your elderly or vulnerable friends and relatives in healthcare facilities. See what conditions exist in their personal environments. This particular floor lacked proper handicap assistive devices for patients and personal protective equipment for workers. That patients had been relocated prematurely to fool inspectors was the word in the ward, due to financial reasons caused by changed Medicare/Medicaid regulations in June.

This is a nursing order requested with great love: Please keep our healthcare system safe. It is up to you.
