Those That Can Golf, Do; Those That Can't, Write About It
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
I will be the first to admit that I am not the best golfer in the world. In fact, I probably rank somewhere closer to the bottom. And anybody who saw me play in the scramble at Maxwelton last Wednesday or anybody in the golf league I play in at Little Big Horn on Thursdays will attest to it.
But I do love the game. I don't know why, and most golfers can't tell you why either. I have always said it is the best game you will ever hate. I just keep coming back for more.
There is something challenging and never ending about the game. It seems like you can always improve your game. And it is a game that most "non-golfers" will never understand.
As a tribute to the game I love, but can't play that well, I have decided to write a weekly golf column. It is the least I can do for a game I hate - I mean love.
This column will be filled with stories and scores of golfing around Kosciusko County. If ever anyone out there has an interesting golf story, feel free to give me a call at the Times-Union.
Inman Top Senior Lefty
Mentone's Bob Inman can lay the claim as the top senior left-handed golfer in the state of Indiana.
Inman played in the 1997 Indiana State Left-handed Golf Tournament at Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru June 14-15.
He beat out 65 other lefties from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. He won the Senior Masters Flight with rounds of 77 and 79 during the 36-hole, stroke play tourney.
Indiana Amateur Championship
June 24-27
One of the top prizes for amateur golfers in the state will be on the line when 156 of them tee it up June 24-27 at the 97th Indiana Amateur Championship at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis.
A record 550 golfers attempted to qualify for the tournament, but the best 156 will vie for the title held by Connersville's Randy Nichols.
Area hopefuls for the title will be Syracuse's Roy Bergman (12:54 p.m. tee time), Warsaw's Thomas Beno (1:12) and Warsaw's Jerry Nelson.
Arguably the best amateur in the area and a member of the Indiana Hall of Fame, Nelson has never won this event.
Nelson's 14th Hole In One
Speaking of Nelson, he recently got his 14th career hole-in-one June 18 at Stonehenge's championship course.
Nelson aced the No. 13 par-3, 175-yard hole with a 5-iron. Witnessing the shot were Bob Miller, Ray Harroff and Stonehenge pro Dave Schumaker.
Junior Golfers
Throughout the summer, the IGA/PGA sponsors several events, including junior tournaments. These results come to the sports department here, and as much as possible, we will publish the area results.
Here is a quick rundown of some of these results.
