NAPPANEE - Thomas "Tom" L. Lehman, 66, of 508 N. Madison St., Nappanee, died unexpectedly at 10:20 p.m. March 29, 2010, in the emergency room at Elkhart General Hospital, from natural causes.

He was born May 6, 1943, in South Bend, to Dillard and Bertha Niswonger Lehman. On Nov. 26, 1966, in Nappanee, he married Rebecca "Becky" Unsicker, who survives.

A lifetime Nappanee resident, he was a 1961 Nappanee High School graduate, attended Ashland (Ohio) College for two years and earned an associate's degree in business from South Bend College of Commerce. He worked at Miles Corp. (Bayor Corp.) from 1966 until retirement in 2004, as a senior systems programmer analyst. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher and on many committees. He served on the Nappanee City Council from 1988-2007; was deputy mayor under Mayors Ken Walters and Larry Thompson; served on the Nappanee Board of Works and Public Safety from 1992 to the present; served from 1988 to the present on the Nappanee Plan Commission; was a former park board member; and served as liaison to every city department. He especially enjoyed his time of liaison to the Nappanee Smokey Stover Fire Dept. He was named Nappanee Citizen of the Year in 2008; was a volunteer to the Nappanee Open Door; and was a member of the Nappanee Rotary Club, serving on the board of directors. He was a member and past master of the Masonic Lodge. He was active with the Boy Scouts, Nappanee, and was a former member of the Nappanee Jaycees.

Also surviving are a son, Roger (and spouse Dawn) Lehman, Nappanee; a daughter, Kristi (and spouse Cary) Lehman-Fields, Zionsville; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Nappanee United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Harrold and Rob Sewald officiating. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. A Masonic service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
