SOUTH WHITLEY – Thomas J. Stump, 62, of South Whitley, died  Oct. 22, 2011, following a fall near Harrisburg, Ill.

He was born June 14, 1949, in Kimmell, to Samuel Lewis and Betty Jean Palmer Stump. On Sept. 13, 1980, he married Sandra Sue “Sam” Gaff, who who died Sept. 1, 2002. On March 22, 2008, he married Shelby J. Walker Hilligoss, who survives. 

He graduated from Columbia City High School. He lived in North Webster until 1997 when he moved to Mentone. A U.S. Marine veteran, he was a welder and a general construction worker. He enjoyed camping and was an avid fisherman.

Also surviving are three children, October (and spouse John) Rassmussen, Silver Lake, and Lanti Stump and Abie T. (and spouse Brittany) Stump, all of Mentone; a step-daughter, Tracey L. (and spouse Ron) Stephens, South Whitley; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Susan Stump, Wickenburg Ariz.; Judith Wolfe, Dwight,  Ill.; Sarah “Sally” Strong, Vero Beach, Fla.; and Debora Christian, North Manchester.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
