AKRON - After Tippecanoe Valley's girls basketball team hosted Winamac Wednesday, Viking coach Gary Teel stood in a hallway talking to his assistant coaches, saying that his team really didn't do anything wrong.

And for the most part Teel is right.

The stat sheet indicates that the game was closer than Winamac's 52-39 win indicates.

For example: Winamac shot 15 of 33 (45.5 percent) from the field. Valley was 15 of 36 (41.7 percent).

Both teams pulled down 25 rebounds.

Both teams made good on three three-pointers.

The score was knotted at 10 after one quarter of play before Winamac clung to a 21-20 halftime advantage.

What was the difference?

The difference, according to Teel, was the third quarter.

"We needed to hit some shots in the third quarter to get some confidence," said Teel, whose Vikings fall to 4-6. "We missed our first couple shots and our confidence was fragile. I can't falter their efforts. Yes, we made some bad decisions. And yes, we made some bad passes."

The Vikings turned the ball over 23 times, while the Warriors, who improve to 5-4 on the season, committed 17 turnovers.

With 6:56 remaining in the third quarter junior Tonya Small scored two of her 12 points, pushing Winamac's advantage to 23-20. With 5:40 on the third quarter clock junior Kelly Good's three-pointer gave the Warriors a 26-20 lead, the biggest lead of the game to that point.

Good led the Warriors with 18 points. Regina Rife and Small added 17 and 12 points, respectively. Valley was led in the scoring column senior Erica Pontious and junior Jamie Doud who scored seven points each. Jennifer Studebaker and Lynette Wilcox chipped in six and five points, respectively.

A field goal by freshmen Kathy Prater at the 4:36 mark of the third stanza brought the Vikings within three, 28-25, but baskets by Small and Rife pushed Winamac's advantage to 32-25 with just over two minutes to play in the third.

Studebaker made good on a field goal attempt at the 1:51 mark of the third, but with a charity toss by Rife and a trey by Good, the Warriors outscored Valley 15-7 in the third quarter to take a 36-27 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Vikings shot 3 of 10 from the field and 0 of 2 from the charity stripe in the third quarter.

"Whenever we lose a little focus teams capitalize," said Teel. "There was just that one spell in the the third quarter. Take away that eight-point turnaround and it's a different game altogether. The whole complexion of the game changes over a couple posessions."

The game would've also been different if Valley hadn't committed 19 fouls to Winamac's 13.

The Warriors made good on 19 of 31 (61.3 percent) attempts from the charity stripe, including 12 of 18 in the fourth quarter. Winamac took three shots from the field in the final frame, making two of them, but still outscored the Vikings 16-12.

Valley was 4 of 11 (36.4 percent) from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

"We had to go foul them," said Teel. "We had the score down to seven and then they got the ball back and scored. It was the same as the Triton game, we played 24 of 32 minutes focused. We lost our focus in the third quarter. We talked at halftime about how we needed to stay focused."

After winning three of their first three games, this was the third loss in a row for the Vikings. Those three games were all played within the last five days.

Valley (4-6) will be off until it hosts North Judson Jan. 4. In the latest poll North Judson was ranked No. 2 in Class 2A. The Blue Jays currently sport a 7-1 record.

"We're gonna regroup at Christmas break and rededicate ourselves to turn around the second half of the season," said Teel. "We've got a lot of games to play yet. We have some conference games left that I feel we can win. The biggest thing is working hard and being mentally focused for 32 minutes."
