Third Quarter Blues Doom Warriors

GOSHEN - The curse continues.
For the fifth straight year, the Wawasee Warriors did not have what it took to win the Goshen Holiday Tournament, losing in the opening round to Goshen 64-48 Friday in the semifinals.
Goshen used a big third quarter to open up a close game, and take control.
The Redskins hit for 24 points in the third, while allowing the Warriors only 11.
Goshen junior Jon Swartz was on fire nailing four of five shots and two free throws for 11 of his game-high 19 points in that period.
The real key for the Redskins was free throw shooting.
Both teams hit 20 field goals in the game, but Goshen went to the line 27 times, hitting 22 of those, while Wawasee stepped up only five times, hitting only three. There lies the difference of the game.
The game seemed to start in the traditional Goshen slow down fashion.
The two teams kept it close in the first quarter, racking up a total of only 14 points, with Goshen up by only two. The Redskins increased their lead to four at halftime, with a back and forth second quarter.
The third quarter was a different story.
Goshen came out running and playing strong defense.
The Redskins ran up 10 points before Wawasee went to a timeout, but that didn't plug any holes, as Goshen picked up eight points more to the Warriors two, and forced a second time out by Wawasee.
After the second break, Wawasee's defense stepped up and allowed only six more points in the final two minutes, while scoring five of their own. But the damage had already been done. Goshen had racked up a 15-point lead, what seemed to be a mental backbreaker for the Warriors.
In the fourth, the Warrior's bid for a comeback was halted by great free throw shooting from Goshen, and Wawasee was forced into the consolation game for the third time in five years.
"I thought our team did a pretty good job of doing what we wanted them to do, offensively. Defensively I thought we did a very good job in the first half," Wawasee coach Jerry Davis said. "Our stats show that they were seven for 10 in the third quarter, and that's pretty tough to defend. We tried to stop the bleeding, but we couldn't get it done."
Ryan Mikel led Wawasee with 18 points, and Jared Mahnensmith followed with 12.
Wawasee (2-5) will face NorthWood (2-5) in the second round tonight at 6:30 p.m. Northridge (5-2) faces Goshen (6-1) in the championship game at 8:15 p.m. [[In-content Ad]]
