Third Diversity Rally Set for May 22

Along with performances by local musicians, local speakers will share their experiences regarding diversity awareness and acceptance in the community.
Speakers and topics this year include: the Warsaw Indian Group with members speaking about the group and sharing Indian culture with local residents; Steve Possell speaking on socio-economic issues the county faces; Andy Semler talking about LGBT’s role in the community; Gary Proietti speaking on ageism; and a local foreign exchange student speaking about the Islamic faith.
Following the speakers and musical performances, there will be a peaceful celebration march around downtown Warsaw.
“The Warsaw Diversity Rally Planning Committee is greatly looking forward to providing the community with another wonderful event. The previous two years’ events were very successful,” said Karen Kusserow, Planning Committee member, in a provided press release. “Given recent legislation and the fact that national elections are right around the corner, it’s even more important to show people in our community that we stand together and celebrate diversity.”
The 2015 Warsaw Diversity Rally, despite poor weather conditions, attracted almost 80 attendees to the speaker and musician portion of the event. The peace march was cancelled due to inclement weather. Having moved the event to the end of May, the Planning Committee hopes for a record-setting crowd.
Refreshments will be available to the first 100 guests. Pre-made signs also will be available for the peace march, however, the public is encouraged to bring its own positive message signage for the demonstration downtown.
“We hope this event becomes a tradition in Warsaw and continues to grow,” stated Linda Francis, Planning Committee member, in the release. “The fact that we’re already in our third year shows that the public values supporting marginalized people in our community. In order for Warsaw, and the surrounding towns, to continue to thrive, we need to make sure that everyone feels welcomed and valued.”
