Third District Republican U.S. Congressman candidate Scott Wise spoke in Warsaw during a town hall meeting this morning.

Wise, 40, Columbia City, held the town hall meeting at Holiday Inn Express. His wife, Kristi, joined him.

Wise faces current 3rd District Congressman Mark Souder in the May 6 primary.

The town hall meeting is the first of many where Wise will give his "Put America First" speech. He will hold a town hall meeting Saturday in Goshen at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express on U.S. 33.[[In-content Ad]]In the weeks leading up to the May primary, he said he plans to make stops in LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and DeKalb counties. He also plans to make stops in Fort Wayne and Elkhart.

Wise served on the Whitley County Council from 2003-06. Wise said serving on the county council taught him a great deal about politics and the political process.

He said extreme partisanship, border security, individual liberty and an overreaching federal government are things he plans to fix if he is elected. He said he is running a grassroots campaign in pursuit of the founding father's intent.

"Our founding fathers wanted self rule, and our government has sold us out where big money lobbyists control legislation," Wise said.

Wise said the voice of the people is being ignored. He said borders are being left unsecured, national debt is high and savings are low.

Austin Brenneman, a junior at Warsaw Community High School, attended the town hall meeting. Brenneman, 17, will vote for his first time in the May primary and was excused from school to attend the town hall meeting.

"I was looking at the candidate list online and ran across Wise's name, and he had an interest in libertarianism, and that is the heart and soul of conservatism in the words of Ronald Reagan," Brenneman said.

Brenneman said he has an interest in politics. He said he feels it is important for young people to take an interest in politics and vote.
