Early Saturday morning a report of theft at the CVS on Detroit Street led to an arrest for methamphetamine.

Officer R.J. Nethaway arrested Dakota Preston Crace, 19, of 920 Anchorage Road, lot 104, Warsaw, for manufacturing methamphetamine, a Class D felony.

At 3:24 a.m Saturday, Crace and a juvenile, who is not named, stole six cartons of cigarettes from CVS, 100 N. Detroit St.

Upon further investigation, officers watched the surveillance video and identified the suspects. Their vehicle was  found at McDonald’s, a block away, later in the morning.

When Warsaw police officers questioned the juvenile in the vehicle, they were informed that the cigarettes were not in the car, but at a mobile home on the north side of Warsaw.

Upon arrival at the mobile home, Crace answered the door and Nethaway informed Crace that he was there to recover the stolen cigarettes. Nethaway also informed Crace that his cousin informed Cpl. Brandon Zartman that the stolen goods were in Crace’s room.

While Nethaway was at the doorway he observed two open packs of cigarettes sitting in the living room that matched the description of the stolen goods. Nethaway, along with patrolman Jon Rice, also observed a small amount of marijuana on the coffee table.

Upon further investigation, Nethaway was led to Crace’s room where Nethaway was told the cigarettes would be. On the way to Crace’s room Nethaway noticed that Crace walked briefly into the room then left. Nethaway observed Crace down the hall at a closet  with a white shopping bag full of cigarettes. Nethaway observed that Crace left a carton in the closet and Nethaway retrieved it and asked Crace why he did not get it out. Crace said he did not see it in the closet.

When Nethaway re-entered Crace’s room he observed more marijuana in small quantities next to the bed. Crace told Nethaway that it was his marijuana and that the yellow pipe on the floor was his cousin’s. Crace then informed Nethaway that everything on the closet side of the bedroom belonged to his cousin. Crace also informed Nethaway that only things on the right side of the closet were his.

Nethaway continued to search Crace’s room.  While searching the right side of the closet he discovered a small container full of white powder. Before Nethaway could ask Crace anything, Crace stated that it was not his, but it was his cousin’s.

Nethaway then asked Crace if he knew what it was and he responded no. Nethaway then asked if it was methamphetamine and Crace said that it was not because his cousin does not mess around with meth. Crace told Nethaway that it was probably crushed pills and that his cousin sometimes abused pills.

After finding the powder, Nethaway fund a book bag that seemed heavy for its size and began to feel around it. He noticed that there was a Coleman camp fuel bottle inside. Upon searching the bag, Nethaway found tubing and coffee filters in the small pouch.

Inside the large pouch Nethaway found a cold pack, plastic bottle with tubing coming out of the lid, pill dough, salt, and a funnel and drain cleaner. Zartman then contacted the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Team and the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force.

Crace and his cousin were transported to the Kosciusko County Jail. No bond has been set for Crace.[[In-content Ad]]
