County Auditor Marsha McSherry told the county commissioners Tuesday that Homestead Credit rebate checks are expected to be in the mail today. The checks are part of the Indiana legislature's plan to relieve some of the impact of last year's property taxes through funneling about $300 million in funds from slot machine permits to homeowners statewide.[[In-content Ad]]County Treasurer Kent Adams said his office will mail 21,417 checks today. The rebate only applies toward the primary residence of homeowners who qualify for the Homestead Credit. Some homeowners, Adams said, will get checks for $0.
"That's because they may have delinquencies, so the rebate will be applied as a credit to the delinquency," Adams said.
The amount of rebate is based on a percentage on the amount of state-assessed Homestead Credit each homeowner is eligible for.
County residents can find out if they have a check on its way to them. A list of residents receiving rebate checks and the amount of rebate each will receive is available on the county Web site, www.kcgov.com
