The Times-Union asked candidates running in Tuesday’s primary to answer the following questions. Listed are the candidates answers. Voting is Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
1. What do you feel needs to be done to create jobs in the district?
2. What are issues important to you and why?
3. What are your thoughts on keeping taxes low for your district?
4. What would you like to accomplish if elected?

Ryan Mishler
Republican
Ryan Mishler, a Republican of Syracuse, is unopposed and is seeking re-election to the State Senate District 9 seat.
1. Government does not create jobs. Government offers incentives for companies to create jobs.
We need to give companies in Indiana the ability to add new jobs and we must also recruit companies to relocate to Indiana.
One way to do this is by reducing the tax burden.  Indiana reduced the corporate income tax rate and we need to consider the possibility of lowering it slightly more. Some of the regulations we place on businesses discourage growth. We need to continue to look at some of these mandates and the burden is has on our corporations.
2. Two years ago, I was assigned the task to assist with the school funding formula.
For so many years, Indiana has funded school systems and not students. Last year, we were able to adjust the formula to begin to follow the child regardless of the school district. I want to continue to work toward a fair and equitable formula for all students.
3. Indiana has been able to balance the budget without raising taxes. In fact, we lowered the corporate tax rate last year. We must also continue to keep property taxes down.
4.Indiana passed legislation asking Congress to give us the ability to create our own health care plan. I believe we were able to show our ability to address the issue when we created the  Healthy Indiana Plan. This created a program to assist people with health care as opposed to creating an entitlement.  If Indiana is able to opt out of the federal health care plan, I would like to restructure the Medicaid system using a similar model. Currently it is an all-or-nothing plan. I believe Medicaid should be a tiered system with a co-pay based on income.[[In-content Ad]]
