He was born May 23, 1945, in Huntington, to Meredith Luther and Marion Jean Steele Hammel. On Aug. 13, 1965, in Huntington, he married Connie Rae Reckard, who survives.
He graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1963, and attended Universal Truck Driving School at LaSalle University. He was inducted into the Huntington County Hall of Fame for basketball. He attended Faith Chapel United Methodist Church when he resided in Huntington. He was a lifetime member of the NRA.
He was employed at Fox Products Inc., South Whitley, as an engine lathe machinist, and he also worked at Transfleet Enterprises, Fort Wayne, as a truck driver. He retired in 2010.
Also surviving are his mother, Marion Hammel, Huntington; two sons, Stacy Lane (and spouse Alysia) Hammel, Warsaw, and Tyler (and spouse Angela) Hammel, Jacksonville; one daughter, Tina (and spouse Kevin) Easterday, Jacksonville; three brothers: Ron Hammel, Huntington; Steve (and spouse Shirley) Hammel, Palm Harbor, Fla.; and Brent Hammel, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Terry (and spouse Cheryl) Reckard, Huntington. He was preceded in death by his father, Meredith Luther, who died July 1, 2004, and one grandson, Justin Hammel.
Services wil be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, 2978 W. CR 1100N, Huntington, with Pastor Diana Siegel and Andrew Hawk officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Huntington.
Calling is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
