AKRON – Technology and maintenance needs make up a large chunk of the capital projects fund the Tippecanoe Valley School Board discussed Monday.
During the special meeting the board went over the first draft of the projects fund plan covering this summer and into 2014-2016. The total for next year is estimated at $2,252,674, which falls below projected income of $1,548,049.
“The difference is $700,000 that we’ll have to come to grips with,” remarked Assistant Schools Superintendent Daniel Kramer, noting he may pull out a few costs, such as emergency allocations, before the board looks at it again Aug. 1.
He added when he makes those reductions he would still like to keep some of Maintenance Director Todd Glenn’s items, which this year include $20,000 for repainting the high school gym ceiling and $22,500 for repairing the gym floor.
Other major projects and needs Glenn discussed include installing football stadium lights, which should be finished Aug. 9; repairing one of two lift stations in the high school pool area; and upgrading the lighting system in the middle school and middle and high school gyms.
Heating and cooling system repairs or upgrades at a few buildings that he discussed would be on the more expensive side. He also described several energy saving projects as “low-hanging fruit” – inexpensive and easy – and noted if the corporation keeps up maintenance in areas like sidewalk patching, those assets should last a while longer.
Schools Technology Director Kayla Rassi went over technology upgrades and replacements, including software license renewals, web servers and firewall installation, and money for the one-to-one device program at the high school.
Other costs in the projects plan draft include  $25,000 for playground equipment at Akron Elementary School this year; $40,000 for work on the playschool room in the Burket Educational Center next year; and a total of $85,000 for security upgrades to Burket, Mentone Elementary School and the high school and middle school next year.[[In-content Ad]]
