SYRACUSE - Former assistant coach Kevin Taylor has been chosen for the position of head wrestling coach at Wawasee High School.

He will assume the position of Scott DeHart, who resigned after this past season. Taylor is a social studies instructor at Wawasee Middle School.

"Wawasee is pleased to have coach Taylor as our head wrestling coach," Athletic Director Mary Hurley said. "He has been an important part of the Warrior high school staff for the last six years. Coach Taylor is well organized and has respect from both his peers and student athletes."

Taylor has been the assistant coach for the past six years, in which Wawasee won six sectional titles, two regional titles and one semi-state championship to go along with two Northern Lakes Conference championships. He had been the head wrestling coach at Wawasee Middle School for three years with a record of 35-13 and also has been an assistant wrestling coach for Team Indiana and an elementary school freestyle wrestling coach.

"It's been one of my lifelong goals to be a head coach," Taylor said. "I enjoyed working under Scott and he taught me a lot about being a coach."

Taylor feels that hiring the head coach from within the system provides for a much easier time for the athletes. He also thinks that this will be another solid year for the Wawasee wrestling program

"It's a nice transitory time for those kids," Taylor said. "I've been around them since they've been in sixth grade so they all know me. It's real exciting because we've got a lot of juniors coming back next year."

Taylor graduated from Manchester College in 1993 and will get his Masters degree in counseling and human services in May. [[In-content Ad]]
