Tax Distributions Delayed At Valley

MENTONE - Any taxing unit with assessed valuation in the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. district will have to watch their expenditures carefully this year.

Mentone Clerk-Treasurer Barb Ross told the town council Monday night that Kosciusko County Auditor Sue Ann Mitchell reported the town would not receive any distribution money in June.[[In-content Ad]]The state will not allow Mitchell to do provisional billing for the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. area.

This morning, Mitchell said the state won't allow her to do provisional billing for anyone with assessed values in the Valley school corporation area because it lies within Kosciusko and Fulton counties and Fulton County is behind. Since Fulton County is behind, the state won't allow Kosciusko County to do provisional billing for that part of the county. The rest of Kosciusko County will see provisional tax billing, with taxing units expected to see distribution by June 30.

"I hate it because our computer company can do it, but the state won't let us," Mitchell said.

Ross said tax bills within the Valley school system, including Mentone, will not go out until August, with the total amount due in November.

If Mentone freezes all spending from general fund other than payroll, utilities and payroll taxes, Ross said Mentone may get by. If necessary, Ross indicated the town can borrow money from the Economic Development Income Tax or water, but they must pay it back by year's end. Ross said she would prefer not to do that if it can be avoided.

"This basically says we are not going to have any money, so we're going to have to watch our expenses," said Tim Croy, council president.
