According to McSherry's office, the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance gave permission to extend the new exemption for seniors from today until Jan. 9, but all other tax exemptions must be filed today.
"Based on the weather we've had and the number of people who came in last week to register, I decided an extension would give those people who haven't had a chance the chance to come in and register," McSherry said.
On Dec. 17, McSherry said about 20 Kosciusko County residents had registered for the tax credit. Today, she said about 600 had registered. McSherry said the extended deadline will give a better window for people to register.
"We didn't even get the forms to file for (the new tax credit) until after Dec. 9," McSherry said.
The new tax credit will prevent qualified homeowners' tax bills from increasing more than 2 percent from the previous year's bill. To qualify, homeowners must be at least 65 on or before Jan. 9 and have a gross adjusted income of less than $40,000 for a couple or $30,000 for an individual. The gross assessed value of an applicant's homestead cannot exceed $160,000. McSherry said the assessed value requirement pertains only to the residential value of the homestead or one-acre home site.
To receive the credit, qualified homeowners must apply at the auditor's office.Applicants must provide proof of income such as a 1040 tax form from the IRS.
The state's tax relief plan includes tax caps that will hold tax bills to 1.5 percent of a home's assessed value in 2009. The new credit for seniors will work in conjunction with the rest of the state plan.
The Kosciusko County Auditor's Office is on the first floor of the county courthouse, 100 W. Center St., Warsaw. The auditor can be reached at 574-372-2328; hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office will be closed tomorrow for New Year's Day.[[In-content Ad]]
