Kosciusko County voters planning on hearing sheriff candidates Jeff Bronsing and Aaron Rovenstine will be missing one if not both opponents Thursday night.

Rovenstine, Republican candidate, told the Times-Union today he will not attend the event because of conflicting campaign events.

"... Aaron Rovenstine will be unable to participate in the scheduled forum sponsored by TAN (Taxpayer Action Network) for Oct. 22, 1998, at 7 p.m.," the press release delivered by Rovenstine stated.

"I'm not against these things (debates), but I think that they need to set some rules and the candidates should have some say-so in what the format is," he said. "I've been campaigning since last September. So if the people don't know my views by now, one night isn't going to make a difference."

Rovenstine added that veiled threats of TAN representative Herschel Rainwater of public repercussions showed a bias on the part of some in the organization that played a part in his decision not to reschedule his planned campaign activities.

"Mr. Rainwater keeps threatening there will be some repercussions if I don't attend Thursday, but I was at the one earlier this year and Jeff Bronsing didn't show up, and nothing like that was threatened against him," Rovenstine said.

Rainwater said that the scheduling of the debate was only recently decided and that Rovenstine declined to attend Tuesday night. He denied making any threats, but said he was sure Rovenstine's lack of appearance will reflect badly on the candidate.

"I'm sure there will be (some repercussions) for him not showing up," Rainwater said. "And, if he fails to show up, we'll just let candidate Bronsing give his views."

Democrat Bronsing confirmed that he will attend the meeting Thursday.

"I'll talk with anyone at any time," he said.

Rainwater said he was given the responsibility of scheduling the debate after its previous coordinator, Elizabeth Cole, resigned from the organization for personal reasons. His efforts, though last-minute, were as thorough as he could make them, he added.

"I'm just trying to save a sinking ship," he said. "And if it does go down, it will be a sad thing, because TAN is the voice of the people - the nonpartisan voice of the people."

The candidate forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the county courthouse. [[In-content Ad]]
