Taking Responsibility

Editor, Times-Union:

Mr. Obama will soon take the stage for his State of the Union speech. If he stays true to the past, he will drag George Bush through the speech with him.

This country has given him, with both patience and latitude, more time than most to get his feet on the ground. But, for him, Bush has been the consummate bulletproof vest against the flack of failure.

Mr. Obama, it's now your year, your economy, your job losses and your financial sinkhole. Leadership assumes responsibility; ego takes a back seat to integrity; the word becomes the unbroken bond; and principles are never compromised.

This past year, instead of creating a feeling of hopeful anticipation that there will be a light at the end of this dark tunnel, you've brought fearful confusion and a quicksand mentality to both the people and the free enterprise system.

We've watched you as you relentlessly insisted that your "health care" system be dragged across the finish line. It doesn't matter that it's a fractured piece of legislation, fiscally irresponsible, and bound to doom quality health care in this country. Your signature on the bill has apparently become more important than the American people.

Perhaps you've misunderstood your purpose as president. You took an oath to uphold the Constitution and to defend this country against all enemies. The powers granted your office were never intended to be used against our citizens nor to be used as a hammer to drive legislation.

So now, Mr. Obama, try to convince this nation that this last year hasn't been consumed with your dislike of our capitalistic system, your special interests, personal agenda, and an underlying disdain for the country you were supposed to lead. Tell us that your only interest is not to transform this nation into something that the American people will never recognize again.
