Taking A Trip Back In Time At The Fair

Darren Lincoln was at the Antique Village with several Farmall tractors that were his grandfather's.
Lincoln said you have to become a treasure hunter when you are looking to rebuild an old tractor.
"Finding the parts is half the battle," said Lincoln.
Lincoln said the Internet has helped people's causes, but it's still many times necessary to go to tractor shows and scrapyards to find old parts.
Mike Loher, the fair board's entertainment director, is showing a 1954 Case. It's the same model of tractor his grandfather used to teach Loher how to drive.
"He had to set blocks down though so I could reach the pedal," said Loher, who learned to drive the tractor when he was 6.
Family connections is a common thing among those who restore tractors.
Logan McDonald worked on restoring a 1948 Co-op E3 tractor, one just like his grandfather had, for six years for his American Heritage Project.
And it took every bit of those six years. McDonald worked on it up until 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and it was judged at 6 p.m.
McDonald is from Silver Lake and just graduated from Tippecanoe Valley High School. He plans to go to Vincennes University where he'll study precision manufacturing.
McDonald also shows goats and steers, but is done with that for this week and plans on "just enjoying the rest of this week."
Also down at the antique village, kids of all ages can shell and grind corn. They can take home the finished product for 50 cents.
Those who go can also punch an ornament with a dog or horse or 4-H clover on it for $1.
There are also many antique tools on display that are priced using what they would have cost in 1900. The prices came from a reprint of a 1900 Sears Roebuck catalog.
The tools are for display only and the items aren't for sale. There are many interesting items on hand, including a gas water heater and old grindstones.
"We're teaching them what it was like 100 years ago," said one volunteer. "What the tools they had to use were like. How their ancestors lived."
Perhaps the oldest item on hand is a broad saw that is estimated to be 150 years old.
The weather was perfect for Monday's opening day of the 94th Annual Kosciuko County Community Fair.
Tonight is the Kokomo Quarter Midgets at the grandstand at 7 p.m. A full schedule of Tuesday's events are online at www.kcfair.org
Wednesday is Community Day, as well as Senior Day. Seniors 65 and older can pay $1 for admission. The demolition derby will take place at the grandstand, starting at 7 p.m.
Wednesday is also Symmetry Medical Day.
