Syracuse Workers To Be Surveyed About PERF

By DOUGLAS SANBURN, Times-Union Staff Writer-

SYRACUSE - Employees of the town of Syracuse will soon receive a survey of three questions at the request of the Syracuse Town Council.

Town manager Matt Vigneault answered the council's questions concerning the public employee retirement fund (PERF) Tuesday evening at the monthly town council meeting.

PERF is a retirement program the council is considering implementing for its employees.

The downside of PERF is that a person must be in the program for 10 years before being able to receive any of the benefits from it. The council was concerned for its older employees, believing that they may not benefit from the plan.

With the intent to learn how the employees themselves feel about the program, Vigneault will prepare a survey.

The survey will ask what the employees think about the program, their age and how long they have worked for the town of Syracuse.

The survey should go out in a few weeks and the council stressed to Vigneault to make sure the employees knew the survey was not a sign-up sheet for the program. It is intended for information gathering only.

In other business, the council approved a request by Marsha Eikenbury, director of the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District, to have street lights put in at the recycling center in Syracuse.

Eikenbury said the lights would help reduce the amount of nonrecyclable trash that is being left there. The additional light will allow police officers to be able to better patrol the recycling site.

Councilman Jake Bitner was presented a plaque by the town council for his years of service to the city. Bitner is leaving the council because he is moving out of Syracuse. [[In-content Ad]]
