Syracuse to Supply Officers With Body Cameras

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

SYRACUSE – Town Council gave the OK to Police Chief Tony Ciriello Tuesday night to purchase body cameras for officers.
Ciriello told council that one camera purchased 3-1/2 weeks ago for $400 has been effective, and already video from it is being used by the county prosecutor.
“What with Ferguson,” he said, finishing that the cameras would protect the public and the police officers as well.
Each camera records full-color video and audio, and has a 12-hour battery life with 19-hours standby. They are cheaper than in-car video cameras, he added.
Ciriello said the recent security upgrade at headquarters came in at least $3,000 under the appropriated budget, and asked if he could use that money to purchase seven more cameras. The council approved his request and said that funds would be made available for at least two more so every officer could have one.
Council also said they would consider spending $25,000 from the paving fund to run sidewalks from the intersection of Ind. 13 north to the new Harkless Street bridge. This came on the request of Utilities Superintendent Jeremy Sponseller on behalf of the parks department’s trails committee.
He explained how the committee planned to extend walking/biking trails from the Waco Drive intersection with Ind. 13, at the Sleepy Owl Supper Club location, north into town. Grant requests had been denied, however, because the trail would not connect with any existing walkway. He said that the $25,000 would go towards sidewalks in the town’s portion, and possible grant money would cover everything over that amount.
Council members agreed that sidewalks would benefit Syracuse as many people around the area walk to businesses around there.
Trails committee Director Megan McClellan introduced herself to council, and explained that a recently acquired grant would allow her to explore the town’s needs and wants. A “Safe Routes to Schools” survey will ask residents their views on trails for students.
Council also agreed to pursue a quiet zone in relation to trains. President Brian Woody said he was working with a company in South Bend who acts as “a bridge between towns and CSX.” At his request, council expressed consensus to support looking into a quiet zone.
In other business, council:
• Heard details about an anti-suicide program being presented from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 11 at the community center in conjunction with the police department, chamber of commerce and Bowen Center. Chamber Director Tammy Cotton said that this program “was for everybody and anybody.”
• Were told trick-or-treat hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
• Were notified that the Holiday Magic event was scheduled for Nov. 22 at Crosson Mill Park. Nov. 29, the day after Black Friday, is “Shop Small Saturday.” Residents are encouraged to visit local restaurants and merchants.
• Heard that an open house at the firehouse was scheduled for Nov. 8 from noon to 4 p.m.
