Syracuse Summer Swim Lessons Set

SYRACUSE – The American Red Cross and Wawasee Middle School announced the 2011 summer swim lesson schedule at the school’s pool.
Registration is Saturday and May 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration will be held at Wawasee Middle School. Enter at Southeast entrance near pool. Registrations also may be made at the start of each session for any available openings.
Session 1 will be June 13-24, with Session 2 June 27 to July 8, and Session 3 from July 11-22.
Cost is $50 per child.
There are five different levels. Parent & Child is for 6 months to 3 years old, Level 2 is for fundamental aquatic skills, Level 3 is for stroke development, Level 4 is for stroke improvement and Level 5 is for stroke refinement.
The purpose of Parent & Child is to help children become comfortable in and around water so they are ready to swim.
Children learn to: enter water; explore front and back float with support; explores how to roll from front to back, back to front with support; explores gliding on front and back with support; leg and arm action; breath control; and basic safety.
Level 2, the purpose is to give students success with fundamental skills.
Participants learn to: enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object, roll over from front to back and back to front, swim on front and back using combined strokes, float on front and back, bobbing, alternate kicking motion rudimentary flutter or bicycle action.
Purpose of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice.
Participants learn to: jump into deep water from the side, perform front crawl and elementary backstroke, change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back, dive from kneeling or standing position, rotary breathing in horizontal position consistently to the side – occasional head lift; and continuous kicking, occasional bicycling action acceptable.
Level 4 develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills.
Participants learn to: perform shallow dive or dive from stride position, perform open turns on front and back, perform front and back crawl, elementary backstroke breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly and perform feet first surface dive.
The purpose of Level 5 is for further coordination and refinement of strokes.
Participants learn to: tread water, tuck and pike surface dive, shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, front and back crawl and butterfly, flip turns and survival swimming.
Class times are: 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., levels 2, 3, 4 and 5; 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., parent & child, levels 2, 3, 4; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., parent & child, levels 2, 3, 4; 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., levels 2, 3, 4, 5; 6 to 6:45 p.m., parent & child, levels 2, 3; and 7 to 7:45 p.m., levels 2, 3, 4.
