SYRACUSE - The Syracuse Parks Department added a new clerical position to the 1999 budget Monday.
The park board decided to add the additional position in preparation for the possible new community center, which would add more work for Susan Neff, park superintendent.
The clerical position will also free up time for Neff to write grants, which the community center will need.
The position was budgeted at $4,000 originally but some members of the board believed the amount would not be enough.
Despite the lack of funds for this year's budget, the park department has a 13.5 percent increase for 1999.
The budget was corrected due to some cutbacks in services and should be back on track as of June 1.
Some of the changes for the 1999 budget include increases in the contract mowing and tree maintenance sections. The increases are balanced by a reduction in the capital budget's park improvement funds.
There will be an increase from a 4-cent tax rate to a 5-cent tax rate for the cumulative building fund. The department will also ask the council for permission to spend $28,000 to begin planning the proposed community center. They will also ask the Syracuse Town Council to help by contributing $18,000 to the project.
The Doug Shrock family donated land adjacent to Lakeside Park in Syracuse for the community center.
The community center will house meeting rooms for the community to use for classes, family reunions and other events.
After the park department conducted a survey of what the community would like to see at the center, they decided to add a walking trail around the perimeter of the center.
Neff said she would like to see the project begin to take shape later this year, but she believes the actual construction won't begin until fall 1999 or early 2000. [[In-content Ad]]
