SYRACUSE – Town council voted to establish Oakwood as an Economic Development Area and approve a Tax Impact Statement Tuesday.

The EDA proposal was passed by the Syracuse Redevelopment Commission before the regular meeting and by the Kosciusko Planning Commission Dec. 7. Town council heard details on the proposal at their Dec. 20 meeting.

At that meeting, Andy Klineman, an attorney representing new Oakwood owner Buckingham Corp., said restoring the historic Oakwood Inn is the main goal of the proposal. He said if the 35-acre site is made a Tax Increment Financing district, Buckingham could use the tax increment to put back into the project.

Tentative plans are to reopen the inn under third-party management in the spring of 2013, Klineman told council.

Also Tuesday, council approved rezoning an historic house on East Pearl Street from residential to commercial. Resident Jason Traycoff had requested the change, saying he plans to open a small restaurant in the 140-year-old house.

The zoning change came with the recommendation of the County Area Plan Commission.[[In-content Ad]]
