Syracuse Library Offers Free Program On Northern Indiana In The Civil War

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

SYRACUSE – Indiana played a vital role in the Civil War.
Approximately 210,000 Hoosiers fought for the Union Army, and served in every major engagement in the war.
The day after the attack at Fort Sumter, which was the beginning of the Civil War, two mass meetings were held in Indiana, where it was decided that Indiana should fight for the Union. Two days later, a call to arms was issued by then-Governor Morton to raise enough volunteers to meet the quota set by Abraham Lincoln. Within three weeks, 22,000 men had volunteered to fight for the Union, more than three times the amount that Lincoln had requested from the state.
Because of Indiana’s high population and agriculturally rich land, Indiana was crucial to the success of the Northern states.
Join the Syracuse Public Library in June for a month of programs highlighting the role that Indiana played in the American Civil War, the politics of the era and the private citizens who captured history in the making.
On Saturday, historian Michael Downs presents “Northern Indiana in the Civil War”, an in-depth look at the unique role northern Indiana area played in the war. Downs was a teacher in the South Bend Community Schools district for 30 years before retiring to pursue his passion for American history, and along with his wife transcribed and annotated the Civil War Journal of Colonel Alfred Wade of the 73rd Indiana Volunteers.
Downs will be in full Civil War soldier regalia, and tell the story of Civil War soldiers from this area that he has researched exhaustively; their life stories, their deeds in the war, and how Northern Indiana helped the Union to win the Civil War.
The program begins at 2 p.m. in the lower level of the library.[[In-content Ad]]
