SYRACUSE – Syracuse Town Council held the July regular meeting and the yearly budget meeting Tuesday evening.
Robin Merchant was introduced as the new Public Works director, Police Chief Tony Ciriello presented police activities and all the budget information was presented.
Ciriello shared the five criminal arrests from the month. One was for drug use, two for driving with suspended licenses, one for identity theft and one for criminal trespassing. There were 17 traffic accidents.
Depending on a few more adjustments by the state tax department, the town’s 2016 budget will be $128,000 to $135,000 under the maximum levy.  This may be the lowest amount ever for Syracuse, possibly $10,000 less than the past year. The 2015 total budget is $3,469,227 and the proposed 2016 budget is $3,520,851. This will be an increase of $51,624.
The Syracuse-Turkey Creek Fire Territory presented the need for sufficient exercise equipment in the fire department to ensure that employees stay healthy and are able to perform at the best of their abilities. The cost of the equipment is $36,546, which the council objected to provide due to a previous agreement.
Other business Tuesday included hearing the Tour de Lakes had 217 riders visiting 33 parks; discussion of reconstruction of local sidewalks; the building of a new park pavilion; and the acceptance of bids for the upcoming road pavement project.
