Classes, project making time, a haunted house, Halloween carnival and fall festival are just a few of the fun and interesting things in store. Also on tap are an indoor yard and craft sale, and a Christmas tree and wreath display. Sports teams for basketball, volleyball and dodgeball also are being formed.
Classes get under way with a Make Your Own Stepping Stone Class, taught by area artist Lynn Allegret, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The cost is $30, and participants will leave with their own decorative stepping stone.
A Fall Wreath Making Workshop is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 19. A beautiful wreath will be completed in class under the tutelage of Pam Donat, SCC program director. The workshop is just $10 plus supplies.
Crafting for Christmas is a six-week class that runs on Tuesdays from Oct. 30 through Dec. 4. Projects include Christmas tree bow ornaments, door hangers, beaded wire ornaments, jingle bell wreaths, Christmas tree centerpieces, decorated pine cones, gift box centerpieces and painted wood ornaments. A $25 fee will be charged.
New to the SCC are two offerings to give artists, crafters and scrapbookers the time and space to work on projects. Scrapbooking Saturdays will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SCC every other Saturday starting Saturday. They will continue on Sept. 22, Oct, 6, Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 15 and Dec. 29. The fee is only $5 per Saturday, and those who take part can use the facilities for all day or just part of it. It is hoped that this turns out to be a time for scrapbookers to share ideas, tips and techniques with others.
On alternate Saturdays, the center will be available for those who wish to work on arts and crafts. The dates are Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 13, Oct, 17, Nov. 10, Nov. 24, Dec. 8 and Dec. 22. The hours are also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the same $5 fee applies.
A repeat of a popular spring event will be the Indoor Yard and Craft Sale on Oct. 13. The center will be opened up for pre-winter sale. Clean out closets, basements or attics or bring craft items to sell. The hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Booth space is $10 without a table and $15 with a six-foot long table. Sign up right away.
A Halloween Haunted House, a new endeavor, will be held at SCC Oct. 25 and Oct. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $1 per visit.
The Umpteenth Annual Halloween Carnival, co-sponsored by the SCC and the Lakeland Youth Center, is open to all area children up to the age of 12. This free and fun undertaking will be at the SCC. The Carnival will be held Oct. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
A Fall Fest with hay rides, pumpkin carving, relay races, pie judging, wheelbarrow races and refreshments will happen at the SCC from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 10. The cost is $3 per person. This is also under the sponsorship of the SCC and the LYC. More family events are in the planning stages for December.
Business, organizations, groups or individuals are invited to decorate a tree or wreath for the Second Annual Christmas Display. The entrance fee is $25 for a tree and $10 for a wreath. The display will be on exhibit from Nov. 12-16 at the SCC daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A silent auction will be held for the wreaths and trees.
Anyone wishing to play basketball, volleyball or dodgeball is urged to contact the Syracuse Community Center as teams are being formed and the schedule set up. Call or stop by as soon as possible.
Volunteers are also needed to help the Haunted House, Halloween Carnival and Fall Fest. To volunteer, to register for any of the activities or for information call the SCC at 574-457-3440. The Syracuse Community Center is across from Lakeside Park. At the intersection of North Huntington Street (Ind. 13) and Main streets, turn east on Main and bear left to North Long Drive at Syracuse Lake. The center will be on the left in the second block.[[In-content Ad]]
