SWES 'REACH'es Out

SOUTH WHITLEY - South Whitley Elementary School went through a year-long process in 2005-2006 discovering where the greatest needs were when it came to the emotional and academic health of the student body.

School personnel gathered input from parents, community members, staff and the students themselves. Through this process, they discovered busy parents could use some extra help through community involvement to ensure students are guided toward a more positive outlook about school and in their relationships with others.

Realizing that it takes a "village" to raise responsible adults, the South Whitley Parent Involvement Committee developed a strategy that has been incorporated into the school's Public Law 221 Plan that meets the need for additional loving and caring adults in a child's life. With much planning and leadership from a neighboring school district, the REACH program is a reality at the school. REACH stands for Reinforcing Education Actively through Community Help.

The school staff is excited that it currently has 20 community members that have dedicated 30 minutes each week to meet individually with a student. This time can be spent doing homework, but more important than that, this time is set aside for the student and mentor to develop a relationship of trust and support.

There are, however, approximately 30 students on a waiting list to be placed with a mentor. Are you loving and caring? Do you have 30 minutes each week to give to a student at SWES? Consider joining the committee and the REACH volunteers in making South Whitley Elementary School a place where the needs of the whole child are met.[[In-content Ad]]
