I am in agreement about one thing with the article Gary Gerard had in Saturday's column in that if you think for one minute that either candidate has the power alone to implement any of their campaign promises you are in a dream world. Just look at the past few decades of presidential campaigns and you will find that our system of checks and balances our forefathers instituted still works pretty well.

The President is limited in most things by his ability to convince both the Senate and the house to vote for his initiatives. The President's only great individual power seems to be his ability to veto bills and his power as related to national security (military and foreign policy) issues.

The social and economic climate changes almost daily, therefore, and campaign priorities will change by this time next year. Neither candidate has the experience or expertise to change the economic issues we are dealing with; they will both rely on the economic experts in the government and private sector to get us turned around.

My biggest personal concern is of this country's foreign policy and our ability to keep this country protected and defended.

We have heard of talk about sitting down at the table and negotiating with powers such as Syria, Iran, and others. To negotiate, one must have something that the other party wants or needs.

Well in case you don't know, we have nothing to negotiate with when it comes to radical Islam. The only thing they want is to destroy us and the West and our allies. That's it, no negotiation required as we have nothing they want except our destruction. That's what they live and die for. I wish we were as zealous for our God as they are for theirs.

Senator McCain has all the credentials to be the kind of leader we need to deal with these nations who want to destroy us and our western allies. His military history, experience, and training are unquestionable. He is firm, confident, pulls no punches, and tells it like it is.

John McCain was my commanding officer in Navy squadron VA-174 at Cecil Field Florida in the last 2 years of my enlistment in 1975-1976. I knew him, talked with him, strapped him in an A-7 aircraft on numerous occasions. I even had to hide from the guy when re-enlistment time came up.

It's only a matter of time before we are confronted again by disaster associated with those who want us destroyed. Even though I don't agree with all of his agenda, he is the leader we need to ensure or security and defense. There is no question of his character, leadership and service.
