Sumpter Recognized For Service To Park Board

Sumpter has served on the board since 1993, and said she is resigning for family obligations.
Sumpter will be replaced by Michelle Boxell, whose duties will begin in September.
Jon Garber, park superintendent, honored Sumpter with a plaque for her service.
Also during the meeting, Larry Plummer, park director, gave an update on the Center Lake Pavilion roofing project, He said the roof was reshingled and came under the $10,000 budgeted for the project.
He also gave an update on McKinley Park improvements. He said landscaping has been done around the gazebo where there were shrubs and bushes. New playground equipment at the park will be delivered on Aug. 5.
Staci Young, activities director, said the Blues and Barbecue concert on July 8 was successful and attended by approximately 4,000 people. She said Friday is the country music concert in Central Park with country musician Neal McCoy performing at 8 p.m.
Also during the meeting, Pat Brown, Sitescapes, gave an update on the park department’s five-year master plan.
He said he has been working to identify the park’s service areas.
“We have adequate park lands for small neighborhood parks, but are short acreage for community parks,” Brown said.
He said community parks are parks such as Central Park.
He said there are 28 acres that would need to be developed for community parks because a lot of the current parks are grouped in the downtown area or near lakes.
“We are looking at the master plan for service areas for the parks where we come short,” Brown said.
Garber shared a letter with the board from Troy Turley, Center Lake Conservation Association president, that thanked the parks department for work on the first annual Warsaw Aqua Mile Open Water Time Trial Swim.[[In-content Ad]]
