Students Get Extra Day Off

Local students got an extra day off today when schools across Kosciusko County were canceled.
If local students get another day off Tuesday, that will not be determined until later today.
Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Lee Harman said today, "We don't know yet (if schools will be canceled Tuesday). We're still going to be assessing the roads throughout the day and what the conditions are like. The main thing is if the buses can turn (on the roads) or not."
Harman said it is important that parents and students watch television or listen to local radio stations like WRSW for cancellations and updates. He said parents should not call the corporation and schools for that information. The decision for Tuesday will not be available until later today, Harman said, and can be heard on local media outlets once it is made.
Wawasee Community Schools Superintendent Mark Stock said the decision to cancel or delay school is usually not made until the morning of the cancellation. He said they have to give snowplows a chance to do their job.
"It doesn't look likely (schools will be canceled Tuesday), but those decisions aren't made until at the latest 6 a.m.," Stock said.
The final decision for Wawasee schools is made by the transportation director, Stock and the financial director.
For parents and students to hear the results of that decision, Stock said, "they typically should listen to all the local radio stations."
Karen Boling, Tippecanoe Valley School superintendent, said, "We don't know for certain, but as I look out my window, it doesn't look too good."
Boling said the Kosciusko and Fulton county highway departments will be contacted this afternoon as to whether or not the roads are in good condition to be driven on. Once the highway departments give the school corporation their report, the administration will make its decision.
Media will then be contacted as soon as the decision is made, Boling said. Tippecanoe Valley students and parents should listen to radio station WRSW, the Rochester station or watch channel 22 for cancellations and updates.
A representative of Grace College and Seminary said classes for Tuesday are scheduled to be held. She said unless something happens overnight, there is no reason why classes wouldn't run.
If there are cancellations or updates, Grace college students can listen to local media such as WRSW or Fox television.
Whitko Community Schools administration, Lakeland Christian and Lighthouse Christian Academies could not be reached for comment. [[In-content Ad]]
