BREMEN - With 11 events completed and four remaining, no local girls track and field athlete had finished high enough at Tuesday's Bremen Regional to advance to the state tournament.

They made up for it in the final four events.

Those events - 3200 run, 1600 relay, high jump and shot put - saw several local girls advance from the regional to the state meet.

For the second straight season, Warsaw senior Hillary Barlow moves on to the state meet in the 3200. Barlow took third with a time of 11:22.31.

NorthWood junior Carol Duncan won the shot put with a heave of 39 feet, 4 inches.

Triton senior Rachel Speicher, who earlier this year set a school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-4, jumped 5-2 to place second at the regional. Warsaw's Kim Kurosky, who won the high jump at last week's Warsaw Sectional, placed third with a leap of 5-2.

Warsaw's 1600 relay team of Rachel Rondeau, Amy Robertson, Jill Wehrly and Claire Beckett took third with a time of 4:05.27.

The top three individuals or relays move on to the state meet.

South Bend Adams scored 89 to win the team title. Warsaw scored 25 for seventh place. Other local team scores included Triton placing 12th with 14 points, NorthWood 16th with 13 points, Tippecanoe Valley 24th with six points and Manchester 28th with five points.

Barlow made the cut by using a method she's not used to. She sealed third place with a strong finish on the last lap, pulling away from Western's Christan Bahler, who finished four seconds behind her.

"I had my one kick for the year," she said. "I save my kick for regionals. It's the only place I seem to be able to do it."

Barlow spent much of the race either chasing or racing next to Bahler.

"Coming in, I was worried more about [fifth-place finisher] Kara Engram from St. Joe," Barlow said. "When I saw [Bahler's] stride, I figured she was tired. I knew with 600 meters to go I would be OK. With 300 meters to go, that was my real kick."

Barlow only did what Warsaw coach Paul Boyd is used to seeing her do - compete.

"With Hillary, it's just the fact that it's Hillary," Boyd said. "She's so mentally strong. That's what's so unique about her. Hillary is not a sprinter. She likes to beat people during the middle of the race. She's so physically strong. She gets a pace and keeps it up the whole race. She has these short, stubby legs, but they are powerful."

The high jump featured the most local competitors, six, in one event.

Tippecanoe Valley's Amber Drudge and Rebekah Parker, Warsaw's Erin Cook, Duncan, Kurosky and Speicher competed in the high jump. Speicher and Kurosky were seeded the highest of the six, and they were the two who survived and advanced.

"[Speicher's] consistently around 5-2 or 5-3," Triton coach Jason Hunter said. "It's nice we're going down to state again. Last year it was Emily Yankovich, this year it's Rachel Speicher.

"I tell people to watch her form. She almost bends herself in half backward. Her form is her plus, but she also has some hops to be able to do this."

"Kim Kurosky was just awesome," Boyd said. "She did not have many misses."

Two records fell at the Bremen Regional. South Bend Adams' LaQuesha Taylor set both with her time of 14.52 seconds in the 100 hurdles and her time of 43.87 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Plymouth's Dawn Deurloo set both the old records in 1994 with her time of 14.62 seconds in the 100 hurdles and her time of 44.64 in the 300 hurdles.

The regional quickly thinned out several local competitors. Warsaw competed in 10 events, Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley in seven each, NorthWood and Triton in five each, Wawasee in three and Whitko in one. Combined, that's 38 events for seven local schools.

Cracking the top eight to score points but not finishing high enough to advance were Warsaw's 3200 relay team of Jessica Wehrly, Chelsea Boyd, Kurosky and Rondeau, who placed fifth with a time of 9:58.70; and Warsaw's 400 relay team of Ashley Kitchens, Kim Love, Robertson and Beckett, who placed sixth with a time of 51.54 seconds.

Manchester's Ann Harms placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.97 seconds. Teammate Lydia Flora broke a school record with her eighth-place time of 12:09 in the 3200, breaking the old record of 12:20.

Tippecanoe Valley's Lynette Wilcox finished in the top eight in two events. She took seventh in the long jump (16-1 3/4) and eighth in the 200 (27.79 seconds). Teammate Amber Drudge took sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet.

Triton's Betsy Salyer placed fifth in the shot put (36-5), and teammate Terrin Meister placed seventh in the 300 hurdles (48.59 seconds).

NorthWood's Katie Chamberlin placed eighth in the 300 hurdles (48.97 seconds), and teammate Natalie Nunemaker placed seventh in the shot put (35-7 1/2).

A night that saw local teams shut out from advancing in the first 11 events ended with a furious 4 for 4 rally in the final four events.

"For us, it wasn't about our team score," Boyd said. "We just wanted to get as many to state as we could.

"I was happy for all our girls who made it here. Whatever happened after sectional, happened. We looked at whatever we did at regional as gravy."
