LEESBURG – With a permanent storefront for the first time in 25 years, Mike Hall can finally turn a home business into a family business. Hall opened Mike’s Garage Door Service on Ind. 15 in Leesburg in spring, after working out of his nearby rural home since 1990. Besides space for a shop and showroom, he said the new spot opens a lot of other doors too. “The main thing for me is the separation now between home and work,” he said Monday in the store at 400 S. Main St., where he offers sales, service and installation. “It was nice to be able to walk across my driveway to go to work,” he added, but there were downsides, like an out-of-the-way location, truck traffic rushing by and space constraints. “I had stuff scattered everywhere,” he remarked, indicating that the new space lets him centralize and organize even if garage doors don’t need that much storage room. “I’ve been doing this since 1975 – I know what I need, and it doesn’t require a lot of stock. There’s not a lot of inventory on doors.” Mike said he started looking for a permanent place when he began to think about retirement. The store is something he can pass down to his son, Kevin, who has been working alongside him since his freshman year of high school 18 years ago. “When I got older I started talking about retirement, and my son’s going to take over,” Mike said. “But in order for me to do my thing and him to do his thing, we needed a place.” He said he “kind of fell into this place,” a former service station built in 1943. They spent a year and a half refurbishing it, turning the vehicle bays in front into offices, small parts sale and a showroom with floor models and color samples, and fixing up the back for storage. “With the showroom, it’s been pretty nice to be able to show off the product and let people pick out the style and color they want,” he said. “And the location is really nice, people can find me now.”
