Entering the home game on a five-game losing streak, Warsaw outscored the Class 1A No. 4 Elkhart Christian Academy Eagles 16-8 over the final 4:20 of the game, winning 52-47.
“I think the players were relieved, more than anything,” Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said about the team’s first win since Jan. 17.
“I think our players can feel good about this win and have the right to feel good about this win,” he added.
And Stookey was a big reason for the win.
Failing to score in the first three-plus minutes of the fourth quarter, Warsaw found itself down 39-36 with 4:52 to play.
Having scored just six points on 3-of-11 shooting in the first three-and-a-half quarters, Stookey hit a three-pointer with 4:20 to play, which ignited a 10-0 Warsaw run, with him netting eight of the points and assisting on the other two.
“Stookey didn’t play very well for much of the game, but he did play well in the last four, five minutes of the game,” Ogle said. “I was glad to see that.”
Stookey ended up scoring a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The focal point of the ECA defense, the Eagles were forced to let up on Stookey as the Tigers’ supporting cast stepped up, with junior Jake Mangas, sophomore Paul Marandet and freshman Kyle Mangas each scoring nine points.
“What made (Stookey) tough tonight was Warsaw’s other personnel stepped up and played a better game than I’ve seen and scouted,” ECA coach Ryan Culp said. “They came in and had some good bench play. Their starters were aggressive. That kind of made it more difficult to guard Stookey.”
After scoring six points in the junior varsity game, Kyle Mangas saw his first big minutes on the varsity level, playing 19:33 and impressing Ogle in the process.
“I wanted to see Kyle Mangas play a little more tonight,” he said of the 6-foot guard, who also had three rebounds and three assists. “He’s been a (junior varsity) player and he’s practiced with us six or seven times this year, but began practicing full time with us last week. I just wanted to see how he’d do and he did a nice job in, basically, his varsity debut.”
Coming into the game, it was ECA that had been more apt at getting balanced scoring, but that wasn’t the case Tuesday.
As team, ECA converted 16 of 27 field goals, with senior Cory Waycaster scoring 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark for career scoring in the process.
“He’s able to score from the outside, but he’s been scoring inside, posting up and making some nice moves,” Culp said of the 6-foot-4 Waycaster. “He’s also a very good passer. He’s had a great season and it’s an honor for him to be able to accomplish the 1,000-point mark.”
Outside of Waycaster, ECA made 8 of 27 shots, 6 of 23 behind the three-point arc.
“We’re a switching (defense) team,” Ogle said. “That makes it more difficult for them to get some of the looks they’re used to getting from teams that don’t switch. We just had trouble with Waycaster.”
Even though the loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Eagles, Culp was looking at the game more as a learning experience.
“Coming into tonight wasn’t really just about playing Warsaw,” he said. “It was about coming into a facility to experience what we hope we experience again come tournament time. But while we were here, (we thought), ‘Let’s beat Warsaw.’”
The Eagles didn’t get the win, instead that went to the Tigers, who were able to breath easier afterward.
“I’m just happy that we finally won a game,” Ogle said. “Now, we focus ahead to two more games, and by Sunday night, we’ll know what’s going to happen in the sectional.”
The sectional draw is Sunday night, but before that, Warsaw hosts Fort Wayne Luers Friday night.
