Stonehenge, Raccoon Have Double Aces

By From The Rough By Greg Jones-

Think about how rare a hole-in-one is. Then think about how much of a rarity two in the same day on the same course would be. Then think about those two holes-in-one being on the same hole on the same day.

The percentages would go through the roof.

But it happened, not once, but twice in the recent weeks at Stonehenge and Raccoon Run golf courses.

At Stonehenge, back on May 22.

By the time Chad Huffer strolled into the clubhouse to report his hole-in-one in the morning, Stonehenge pro Dave Schumaker was just glad to see someone get the first ace of the season. He was even more excited when John Clay came in the afternoon with the second ace. But it quickly turned to amazement when he realized it was on the same hole (No. 7) as Huffer's.

"It has to be very, very rare," Schumaker said. "I was happy when we had our first hole-in-one of the season."

The hole played a little longer with Clay hitting a 9-iron an incredible 164 yards for his ace. Huffer used an 8-iron for his 139-yard shot.

Witnessing Huffer's shot was Tom Krizmanich. Looking on while Clay hit his were Dan Widaman, Doug Spaulding, Glynn Johnson and Chris Doran.

"In 25 years, I don't remember this happening before," Schumaker said.

At Raccoon Run, back on May 29.

It was the No. 3 hole that it happened on. Dixie Mayer hit an 8-iron to ace the hole. Witnessing were Craig Justice, Rich Mayer, Susan Pletcher, Justin Leslie, Carl Arnett, Tex Sellers, Mike Shirley and Nick Roberts.

The second ace came from Terry Roberts, who hit a pitching wedge. Looking on were Andrew Trolinger and Nick Roberts.

Indianapolis Open

Three competitors from Warsaw are competing at the IGA/PGA Indianapolis Open at Plum Creek in Carmel June 1-2.

Schumaker and Sycamore pro Quinn Griffing finished in a three-way tie for third place with a 145. Raccoon Run pro Denny Hepler ended in a five-way tie for 12th with a 149.

Peru pro Todd Smith won the event with a 140.

Schumaker shot 72 in the final round, Griffing a 73 and Hepler a 78.

After the first round, Hepler (71, even par) was in a three-way tie for sixth, Schumaker (73, 2-over) was in a four-way tie for 16th. Amateur Jerry Nelson (78, 7-over) was in a seven-way tie for 65th.
