Stella's Enjoys First Three Months

A lot can be said about the fact that the original recipe book survived a fire that gutted the former Gordy’s restaurant in Warsaw.

Fresh ingredients, a re-energized staff and a new location have breathed life into that old recipe book.

Karol Clemens had owned Gordy’s since 2001 before the 2008 fire closed it down.

This year, Clemens decided to re-open her restaurant with  the same dishes that made her former restaurant so popular.

That includes gourmet subs, cajun seafood bread, pastas and salads.

But things didn’t stop there.

A new name was decided on. Clemens had owned Gordy’s for years before the fire, and it was time to make the restaurant truly her own.

So in honor of the family’s Great Dane, Stella’s Sub Pub was born.

It’s located at 918 N. Detroit, Warsaw.

Clemens’ son Adam Sherrill moved back from Florida to run the kitchen.

Sherrill has come back to work on local favorites as well as bring some new ideas to the table.

He’s working on creating po’ boy sandwiches.

He’s created a pina colada sauce, and now that Stella’s has a fryer they can offer such fare as coconut shrimp, sweet potato fries, calamari and bubble bread.

Stella’s opened in April without much fanfare, but the response was overwhelming.

“We are just so incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us here at Stella’s,” said Clemens.

Crowds lined up out the door to get their hands on the local dishes that could only be found at Stella’s.

“It was so overwhelming, the response,” said Clemens. “We’ve been so fortunate since we’ve been open.”

But the staff at Stella’s isn’t stopping with early success.

They continue to add items to the menu.

“I’ve worked other restaurants in the time we were closed, so did (Karol),” said Sherrill. “So we came back with a lot of ideas and a lot better.”

They have all-day delivery that goes from CR 300N to CR 300S and CR 300E to CR 300W.

“And we’re more than capable of handling big orders, orders for companies or factories. We’ll work with our customers on delivery times and big orders,” said Sherrill. “We’re more flexible now.”

Right now, Stella’s is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Starting July 29, the restaurant will be open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Stella’s serves beer and wine now as well. Along with domestics, the restaurant serves imports like Stella Artois and Blue Moon.

Besides Clemens and Sherrill, Michelle Klosowski also returned as manager.

About half of the 20-person staff at Stella’s were formerly employed at Gordy’s.

“People that come in are going to recognize a lot of the people they got to know in the past,” said Clemens.

“Our employees that came back had jobs, they took a chance,” said Klosowski. “They just really wanted to be a part of this family again.”

The full-service restaurant is also branching out and offering homemade cupcakes.

For Clemens, it’s all about offering whatever the customer wants.

“We’ve been treated so well in this community. We’re a part of this community. And we’re here to make our customers happy,” said Clemens.

The new location also has a new look. Gone is the dark color scheme of the old Gordy’s.

The new restaurant has light colors and is filled with natural light.

The 2,000 square-foot restaurant can seat up to around 70 people.
