State Rep. Borror Seeks Souder's Seat

Borror, 52, (R-Fort Wayne) visited the Times-Union Tuesday afternoon to discuss his run for the seat.
Borror is seeking the seat that was vacated by Congressman Mark Souder who resigned May 21.[[In-content Ad]]A Republican caucus will be June 12 at 10 a.m. at Columbia City High School for precinct committeemen and woman to select a Republican candidate to be in the November 2 special election.
Borror has served as the District 84 representative since 2001 that covers Allen County, including Fort Wayne and most of St. Joe Township.
Besides serving as a state representative, Borror has served as vice president of corporate services for Star Financial Bank for the past four years.
Borror sits on the house ways and means, veterans affairs and state budget committees.
During Tuesday's interview, Borror said he is seeking the seat to fight for two issues that are important to him, job creation and reducing the deficit.
He said he has budgetary experience in serving as a state representative on the state budget committee.
"Most of the job legislation since 2005 in Indiana has come through the state's budget committee of which I serve as chairman," Borror said.
He said to solve the deficit, Congress needs to approve a balanced budget.
"For two years in a row I have introduced legislation for a state spending cap," Borror said.
"It's not that the government is collecting too little in taxes, it is that government is spending too much money."
Borror said taxes haven't been raised in Indiana compared to states such as Michigan, Ohio and Illinois.
In 2005, Borror authored legislation creating the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. The IEDC replaced the Department of Commerce in 2005 as the entity to plan and implement Indiana's economic development efforts.
Borror said he feels constituent services are important to him and said he likes to solve problems.
"What I have always been in favor of are committee chairman's term limits. The real power within any legislative body resides with committee chairman," Borror said.
He said he would support committee chairmen term limits in Congress.
Borror said he has held numerous positions during his career, beginning as a campaign staff member for U.S. Senator Richard Lugar in 1982.
In 1983, he accepted a position at the National Republican Senatorial Committee in Washington D.C. of which Senator Lugar served as chairman.
During that time, Borror worked with then future governor Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, who at the time served as the executive director of the committee.
Upon returning to Indiana in 1987, Borror continued his involvement in politics as a precinct committeeman, state convention delegate, treasurer for State Senator David Long and finance chairman for numerous local and state officials.
In 2003, Borror served as the volunteer state chairman of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Indiana.
He also has held leadership positions within the Home Builders Association of Fort Wayne and the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce.
In addition he served on the Board of Directors of the Construction Financial Management Association, the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority and the Board of Directors of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana.
In 2005, Borror received the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Champion Award for his commitment to improving the state's economic climate for small businesses.
Other candidates who have expressed interest in the seat include Indiana's NewsCenter channel 21 anchor Ryan Elijah, District 49 Indiana State Rep. Wes Culver; Bob Thomas (R-Fort Wayne) and runner-up in the May 4 GOP primary; and Fort Wayne resident Mike Foster.
Other Republicans who have stated their intentions to fill the seat are state Sen. Marlin Stutzman (R-Howe); Liz Brown, Fort Wayne city councilwoman; Greg Dickman (R-Auburn) and Phil Troyer (R-Fort Wayne).
Tom Metzger, Warsaw, is running as an independent write-in candidate. Metzger has led the Ku Klux Klan and founded his own white supremacist group. He said he has not been involved with the Klan for 30 years.
Other candidates are former Allen County sheriff's candidate Mike Foster and Lonnie Powell, volunteer director of a recovery ministry sponsored by The Chapel.
Joe Schomburg (R-Fort Wayne) announced this morning that he is seeking the seat.
