SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Community School Corporation opened their monthly meeting with an announcement from Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington that the board has been awarded the Indiana School Boards Association's Outstanding School Board plaque.

Edington also announced that North Webster Elementary School was awarded donations as part of an effort to secure funds for the Positive Behavior Intervention Support initiative. The North Webster elementary Parent, Teacher, and Friends Organization donated $500 to the program. Donations of $500 also were received from Shoops Youth And Sports Foundation and from Mr. Richard Long.

The Pamida Foundation donated $640 for the Tools 4 School program.

Kristina Long, teacher at Syracuse Elementary School, gave a presentation concerning the Lilly Grant she received, and how it was used.[[In-content Ad]]"A Lilly endowment is actually associated with Eli Lilly," Long said. "It was put together back when the founders of the company had started, they wished that some of their money would be set aside to give renewal grants to teachers and ministers. There are 120 grants each year to Indiana teachers. I was fortunate enough to be one of those."

The grant itself is $1,000 to allow the recipient to go do whatever they feel will help renew their spirit as a teacher.

"I choose to go to Louisiana and help with hurricane rebuilding," Long said. "I also saw some things in Galveston (Tex.), which is sort of my backyard originally, and it really pulled at my heart. That's how I chose to spend my time. I worked for five different organizations over seven weeks over the summer. I did everything from painting, to cleaning, dry walling, I even planted marsh grass. You name it, I did it." Long also gave a smart board presentation of photos she took of the properties in Louisiana and Texas where she worked over the summer.

The board approved the final bond resolution, and resolution approving continuing disclosure undertaking. This is a legal step required before bonds can be put up for sale. These bonds will be used to pay back a $2,000,000, interest-free loan from the federal stimulus program. As discussed at last month's meeting, the money will be used to replace individual unit ventilators at Wawasee Middle School.

The first reading of the NEOLA policy updates was conducted. NEOLA is an organization that assists school boards to develop policies and operating procedures that are in compliance with all state and federal laws.

The board also approved two new courses for the high school-Advanced Spanish and Entrepreneurship, which is a course focused on providing students with the knowledge to develop a small business.

It was announced that last Saturday's H1N1 inoculations went smoother than expected.

Working with the Kosciusko County Health Department, Wawasee was able to give 954 vaccinations.

In personnel matters, the board approved the following individuals for employment with the corporation: Daniella Vohs Hartzell as temporary 3rd grade teacher at Milford School; Bradley Hursh as a temporary Highly Qualified ESL paraprofessional at Milford School; and Pam Unruh as a temporary part-time central office administrative secretary.

Teresa Lesneski has submitted her resignation as a five hour per day paraprofessional at Syracuse Elementary; and Janell Eltzroth, Janay Hackleman, and Andrea Hoeppner have all requested leaves of abscence.

Andrew Vester is being transferred from a position of school year custodian at WHS to a year-round position at Milford School. Don Fleet and Leola Nelson are no longer working at custodians at Milford School.

In financial matters, the report for the month ending October 31st, 2009 is as follows:

Beginning balance:

$25,528,726.87

Receipts

$2,945,092.02

Disbursements:

$5,323,468.00

End balance:

$23,150,350.89

Wawasee Community School Corporation board members are George Gilbert, Mike Wilson, Bechy Linnemeier, Dallas Winchester and Mary Louise Dixon.
