INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles is urging motorists to renew their driver's licenses online because a record number of licenses will come up for renewal next year.
The state adjusted the expiration dates of driver's licenses to comply with the original implementation schedule of the federal Real ID Act. That means a record 2.1 million licenses will expire next year, compared to just 260,000 that will expire this year.
To help ease the renewal crush in 2012, the BMV is sending reminders to drivers explaining that many license renewals can be done online without visiting a license branch.
Driver's license can also be renewed up to a year prior to its expiration date. If a license expires in 2012, the driver can renew it the day after their birthday in 2011. Renewing early can also help people avoid the crowds expected in 2012.
Not all drivers can renew online. Those who need to update their personal information such as name and address, those over 70 years old and those who have six points or more on their licenses are excluded from the option.
Drivers can also renew their vehicle registrations online. This year almost 70 percent of registration renewals were handled online, by mail or by phone as customers avoided license branches around the state.
"We are providing fast, easy and secure ways to do business with the BMV, and overwhelmingly our customers are choosing those options," said BMV Commissioner Scott Waddell.
Customers who have to go to BMV offices can avoid lines by steering clear of Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are the busiest days at most license branches.
Whether drivers renew their licenses online or in person, all licenses are printed at a central processing facility and mailed to the driver's home later.

SOUTH BEND (AP) — A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for next week on a new Catholic high school building in South Bend since supporters have raised more than $33 million.
Leaders of St. Joseph's High School still face raising about $2.5 million more toward replacing the current 58-year-old building.
School board president Matt Edmonds tells the South Bend Tribune he is very confident the rest will materialize. The goal is to have the new school ready in time for the start of fall 2012 classes.
The groundbreaking is set for June 10 at the former site of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center near the city's downtown.[[In-content Ad]]
