Starkweather Shoots Whitko Past Central Noble In Opener

SOUTH WHITLEY - Brieann Starkweather, one of the eight sophomores on Whitko's basketball team, scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Whitko beat Central Noble 54-33 on Thursday.
It was Whitko's first game of the season.
After leading 24-18 at halftime, Whitko outscored Central Noble 21-6 in the third quarter to take a commanding 45-24 lead.
Whitko outrebounded Central Noble (0-3) 47-30. Starkweather scored her 19 on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor.
"She came off the bench for us and did a nice job," Whitko coach Ray Davis said. "We weren't even sure she was going to be able to play because she has had a problem with her knee. She was just given clearance to play Monday."
Kelly Osborn, another sophomore, turned in a solid game for the Wildcats. She paced the team with five assists and five steals and also had four points and four rebounds. Melissa Sands scored 13 for the Wildcats.
Whitko, 1-0, hosts a 9 a.m. Saturday invitational. The Wildcats face Lakeview Christian (Marion), and Southern Wells meets North Miami. The championship will be played at 3 p.m.

At Elkhart, Wawasee 6-foot-1 junior center Lydia Carpenter scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Warriors past Memorial on Thursday.
Three other Warriors scored in double figures, including seniors Carly Beer (13), Aubrey Coy (12) and Amy Cockburn (10). Cockburn and Coy scored 12 of Wawasee's 15 first-quarter points.
Karissa Evans had nine rebounds for Wawasee. Kari Wortinger led with seven assists, and Coy led with five steals.
"Our seniors stepped up for us," Wawasee coach Randy Aalbregtse said. "Lydia played well inside."
The Warriors won despite struggling at the free throw line, where they made only 6 of 23 attempts.
Wawasee, 2-0, has a 2:30 p.m. Saturday game at Fairfield.

At Syracuse, the Wawasee swim team lost to Penn on Thursday.
The Warriors took three first places against Penn, a school that traditionally churns out strong swim teams. Stacy Naugler won the diving competition with a score of 196.20. Kristine Shivers won the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.69 seconds. Wawasee's 200 freestyle of Naugler, Carrie Grothaus, Laura Lundin and Jenny Marty tied for first with a time of 1:44.12.
Penn's Alison Bushkill took first in three events, the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle.
Wawasee, 1-1, competes in the Penn Relays at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Lighthouse Suffers First Loss
Fulton County Christian Academy handed Lighthouse Christian Academy's volleyball team its first loss Tuesday, 15-6, 2-15, 15-7.
Jamie Hamby and Rebekah Brown led Lighthouse to the 15-2 win. The Crusaders led 6-2 the last game, only to see Fulton County Christian go on a 13-1 run for the win.
