In a high school girls soccer regional semifinal at Jackson Middle School in South Bend, the eighth-ranked Indians scored a goal 30 seconds into both halves and went on to beat the Lady Tigers 4-2.
Warsaw, which set a school record for shutouts with 13, had only given up six goals total in its previous 17 games.
"I'm surprised we got burnt so early," said Warsaw coach Dan Miller, whose team finished the season with a 13-3-2 record. "Our plan was to come out in a defensive mode, and then adjust and go from there. We just came out flat in the first minute of both halves."
Junior Rachel Staud scored St. Joe's first goal on an assist from Madison Turner, but Warsaw answered a minute later with an unassisted goal from senior Kelly Wildman.
"That's how we wanted to start the game," said St. Joe coach Johan Kuitse, who was later issued a red card and ejected from the game. "Of course, to turn around and give that goal back isn't what we wanted to do."
Despite the early offensive highlights, the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime.
In a moment of deja vu, though, St. Joe struck in the first 30 seconds of the second half, this time when junior Catherine Raster scored on another assist from Turner.
The Lady Tigers didn't have an immediate answer this time around, however, and eventually fell behind 3-1 when senior Lindsey Kuitse converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute.
"I think we're quicker than any team they've seen," said Kuitse. "Honestly, had we played better, we should have scored a few more. There were huge gaps in their defense."
Warsaw cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 58th minute when junior Kelly Williams scored less than a minute after Kuitse was red-carded for comments made to one of the officials.
Turner put the finishing touch on the Indians' win with a goal in the 65th minute.
"We've played a lot of good teams, but tonight we saw the three best players we've seen all year, and they were all on the same team," Miller said of the Indians.
St. Joe outshot the Lady Tigers 9-5 and had seven corner kicks, while Warsaw had none.
Warsaw sophomore goalkeeper Abby Schue made five saves, while St. Joe senior Melissa Kuhar made three saves.
With the win, the Indians improved to 16-3 on the season and earned a berth in Saturday night's regional final against Northern Indiana Conference rival Penn.
The Lady Kingsmen (14-5) defeated Goshen 2-0 in Wednesday's first semifinal game.
