KOKOMO - Decisions, decisions.
Manchester's Rex Reimer advanced to the Kokomo regional after placing second in the Plymouth sectional. Thursday he placed second at the Kokomo regional to advance to the state competition. Then he had a decision to make.
Reimer, a senior at Manchester High School, is scheduled to graduate next Friday. The problem? The boys state track meet is scheduled the same day.
"My parents and I have talked about it because I figured I might make it to state," said Reimer. "At first they said 'no' to me going to state, but then they decided I could jump in the preliminary three jumps at state and still make it home in time for graduation.
"Last year I made it to state but I scratched in all three of my jumps. Hopefully this year will be better."
"I Know Rex hoped to jump farther tonight, but he placed second and that was good enough to move on," said Manchester coach Ned Bowman. "Running the 100 and 200 preliminaries took a lot out of him. He said his back tightened up a bit, but he did well."
Reimer won't be traveling to Indianapolis alone. His teammate David Bazzoni placed third in the pole vault competition to advance to the state meet.
"Bazzoni did very well tonight," said Bowman. "He's just a sophomore and he is moving on to state. He's come a really long way this year.
"I am very proud of my team tonight. I think this was a pretty good way to spend my birthday."
Terry Screeton, Tippecanoe Valley's coach, was pleased with his team's performance as well.
"We ran really well," said Screeton. "We placed in every event we competed in except the 1,600 relay. It was a good performance and I am pretty happy with it."
Kevin Hileman, a senior a Tippecanoe Valley, did not have to make the same decison as Reimer, however. Hileman placed second in the 800 to advance to the state meet with a time of 2:00.06 but he graduates Saturday, so he did not have to make a decision about the state meet.
"Kevin is improving at the right time," said Screeton. "He has knocked about two seconds off his time every week here lately. He is really improving at the perfect time."
Reimer, Bazzoni and Hileman are the only three area competitors advancing from the Kokomo regional, but several local athletes competed and placed in the meet.
Manchester's Greg Groombridge competed in the discus and shot put events, placing fourth and fifth, respectively, while his teammates on the 400 relay team (Davis Barrett, Michael Hendrix, Josh Peden, and Reimer) placed sixth.
Also placing sixth at the regional was Valley's Adam Smith in the 110 high hurdles. Smith's fellow Viking, Eric Carlin, placed seventh in the 300 hurdles while Triton's Nathan Gephart placed seventh in the 3,200 meter run.
Triton's Mason McIntyre finished eighth in the 1,600 competition and Noah Silveus of Tippecanoe Valley placed eighth in the high jump competition.
Also placing eighth in the regional were Mike McNeal of Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko's 1600 relay team of Mike McKeighen, Ben Mohr, Micah Moncrief and Josh Gonzalez.
The state meet will be held next Friday in Indianapolis.
