NORTH MANCHESTER - After his team soundly defeated Valley 84-49 Friday night Manchester coach Gary Goshert told members of the media how poor his team shot in the Squires' two losses last week.

In losses to Peru and Carroll, Manchester shot percentages of 36 and 43 from the field. In the victory over Valley, a win that moved the Squires' record to 10-3 and 5-0 in the Three Rivers Conference, the Squires shot 56.7 percent (34 of 60) from the field. The Vikings (10-4, 4-1) connected on just 17 of 46 (36.9 percent) field goals.

Manchester's Eric Swan led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, Rex Reimer chipped in 18 points. Valley was led by Brandon Eaton's 13 points. Jarvis Shepherd and Josh Cumberland added 12 and 11 points respectively.

"It was important for us to come out and relax and play and get in the flow of things," said Goshert. "We hit some big shots early. If you look back at last weekend when we shot 36 and 43 percent, even though we shot poorly we did some good things."

Valley started last night's highly touted confrontation by doing some good things as they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on the strength of an Eaton three-pointer. But the Viking lead was short-lived as the Squires, trying to snap a two-game skid, rattled off 13 consecutive points to take a 13-5 lead midway through the opening frame and 19-11 after one quarter of play.

"They had a good ballgame," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "They were hungry and wanted to prove something. We won six in a row and kind of forgot what got us there. We have to get back to basic things. We kind of got away from the team aspect and worried too much about individual stuff."

Manchester center Chris Betten opened the second stanza with a field goal that sparked a 6-0 Squire run, pushing the deficit to 14. Shepherd stopped the Viking scoring drought with two free throws, but Valley couldn't get anything to fall. All seven second-quarter Viking points came from the charity stripe. They were 0 of 8 in the frame and 5 of 22 for the half. Manchester shot 9 of 17 in the second quarter and 16-26 (61.5 percent) for the half to take a commanding 40-18 lead at the break.

"There was a big difference in shooting," said Patrick. "But that's no excuse for not doing what we need to do. They hit six three-pointers in the first half, that's tough to deal with."

Valley's offense showed signs of life in the third quarter, Manchester only outscored the Vikings 17-12 in the frame, but Valley was called for numerous fouls in the quarter including a technical foul on Patrick at the 1:17 mark with Manchester in command 51-28.

Nate Litte made good on the two charity tosses for the technical foul and Valley's Dax Snyder tossed in two free throws of his own to account for Manchester's 57-30 lead after three quarters.

Manchester came out agressive in the final frame. Reimer connected on two quick three-pointers enroute to a 27-19 quarter in favor of the Squires.

"They were more agressive," said Patrick. "This is the first game we got outhustled everywhere."

Valley (10-4, 4-1) will be back in action Tuesday when they host TRC foe Southwood at 6 p.m.

"This is a big conference loss," said Patrick. They have two conference games left and we have two more conference games, so you have to hope there's still a chance."

Manchester (10-3, 5-0) will host Whitko tonight at 6:30 p.m.

"We have a big TRC game with Whitko tommorrow night (Saturday)," said Goshert. "Valley was important, now Whitko is the most important game on our schedule. They're a big rival, and it's at our place."
