Squires Struggle In All Areas
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
COLUMBIA CITY - Manchester's boys basketball team got off to a 4-0 start by playing solid basketball. After the Squires lost their first game of the season last week to Homestead, they hoped to get back on track against the 2-3 Columbia City Eagles.
Instead of returning to their winning ways, the Squires played sloppily and got blown out 58-27 by Columbia City in Saturday's game.
"We played tired," Manchester coach Gary Goshert said. "The whole key to the game as at the defensive end for us. We wouldn't defend the perimeter at all.
The first quarter was the most competitive of the game, as there weree three ties and five lead changes. Each team came out in an aggressive man-to-man defense. Columbia City was the better defensive team, limiting the Squires to 22.6 (12 of 53) shooting for the game.
"Our shot selection was poor at times tonight," Goshert said. "We just didn't show very good poise."
Manchester took a 9-7 lead late in the first quarter on a three-point play by center Nate Kerr and led 13-12 after one quarter. Judging by the quarter, the game looked as if it would be a see-saw battle for four quarters.
The second, third and fourth quarters proved to be disastrous for the Squires.
The Eagles held the Squires to four second-quarter points. Three-pointers by Columbia City's Trevor Shively and Mike Schumaker started the quarter as the Eagles jumped ahead 18-13. After a brief run by the Squires, the Eagles upped the lead at halftime to 23-17.
"Columbia City deserved to win," Goshert said. "They got all the loose balls. We just didn't show up. I just want us to give some effort."
Things only got worse for the Squires in the third and fourth quarters. After scoring four second-quarter points, Columbia City limited the Squires to six in the third quarter. The Eagle guards presented the most problems for the Squires.
Shively hit 3 of 6 three-pointers and led the Eagles with 17 points. Schumaker hit two three-pointers and added 12.
"Our defense up top couldn't stop their guards," Goshert said.
Taking a 32-23 lead into the last quarter, the fourth quarter summed up Manchester's night: ugly.
The Squires followed a six-point third quarter with a four-point fourth quarter on their way to getting toasted by 31. The Eagles started the quarter with an 8-0 run to take the 40-23 lead. They finished the game with a 7-0 run to end the Squires' misery.
Lee Shafer led Manchester with 14 points, but he hit just 7 of 19 shots. The second-highest scorer for Manchester was Kerr with six.
For the game, Columbia City shot 46 from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line. The Eagles did all the right things on this night. Not only did it look like the Eagles were the 4-1 team and the Squires a 2-3 team, Columbia City handed Manchester a wake-up call.
"Our schedule just gets tougher," Goshert said, eyeing the next game with Oak Hill, one of the preseason favorites to win the Three Rivers Conference. "We are really going to have to be ready to go against a very good Oak Hill club."
Manchester drops to 4-2, while Columbia City improved to 3-3.
