AKRON -ÊMaybe the name should be switched from the Three Rivers Conference Tournament to the Manchester Tournament.

After all, the Manchester Squires own it.

Machester's boys tennis team maintained its dominance of the TRC Tournament by finishing first Saturday with 19 points. The tournament began in 1988; Manchester has won every year but two, 1993 and 1997. The Squires tied Valley for first in 1997.

Out of five championship matches, Manchester won four.

Valley took second with 15 points and was followed by Rochester with nine and Whitko with four.

The tournament went as expected. Manchester was considered the favorite, with Valley close behind. The Squires, 5-2, had four seniors. Valley, 8-2, had one senior.

"For the most part, we knew Manchester was the team to beat," Valley coach Rod Hamman said.

"Valley was the one team we had to look out for," Manchester coach Eric Christiansen said.

A key match that decided the tournament came at No. 1 doubles, the only time Valley and Manchester met in the first round. Manchester's Michael Good and Bart King beat Valley's Brian Love and Andy Martin 6-2, 6-1, knocking the Vikings into the consolation round.

In all the other matches, Manchester and Valley clashed in the championship.

Valley's fate was sealed when No. 1 singles player Drew Shafer strained a leg muscle in the championship match. Matt Purdy won 6-0, 3-1 as Shafer eventually retired.

"To his credit, Drew went as long as he could," Hamman said.

Said Christiansen: "Matt played the best match I have ever seen him play in the finals. What he figured out on his own in practice this week was his mid-court game. Now he can put away any short ball."

Manchester's Pieter Naragon won the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Valley's Jeremy Shambaugh, and Manchester's Mike Howard beat Valley's Luke Shambaugh 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match.

Good and King beat Rochester's Mitch Anderson/Adam Tatter 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles championship.

"Like Matt, I thought our No. 1 doubles team played its best match of the year," Christiansen said.

Valley's Kyle Robinson/Phil Jackson beat Manchester's Todd Shumaker/Nathan Bucher 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles championship.

But when it was over, Manchester had won its ninth title in 11 years.

"It went better than we expected," Christiansen said.
