SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊSame teams.
Different place.
Different date.
Same outcome.
When the Manchester Squires volleyball team hosted the Whitko Wildcats two weeks ago, it took three games for the Squires to defeat the Wildcats. Thursday night in South Whitley, the Wildcats again took the Squires to three games before falling to the Manchester squad 10-15, 15-6, 15-8.
Whitko started the game on the right foot as Tary Hamill served up the first point of the game to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
But that lead was short-lived as Joni West and Jennifer Jester joined forces for the Squires and served up five points.
Enter Whitko's Samantha Miller. Miller stepped to the serving line and led Whitko to eight straight points, including three aces, giving the Wildcats a 9-5 advantage.
The Wildcats led by as much as 11-5 before the Squires started to make a comeback. Jenny Brubaker and West combined to get the Squires as close as 11-9, but then the Whitko offense kicked into high gear.
Chelsey Grant served up three points to make the score 14-9, and Monica Sands finished the job, giving Whitko a 15-10 win in the first game.
"I think both teams played a lot better than they did the last time they met," said Whitko coach Rachelle McCammon. "Neither team played well the first time we met."
However, Manchester would not allow Whitko to enjoy its first-game success for long. West served the first three points of the second game to give the Squires a 3-0 lead to snap the Wildcats back to reality.
Eventually, Whitko tied the score at 4-all, but Brittany Falk and Brubaker picked the Squires up and built a 10-4 lead for Manchester.
The Squires allowed Whitko to score just once more in the second game and tied the match at 1-all with their 15-5 win.
Then came the rubber match. Jessica Hicks served up the first four points of the match to give Manchester a 4-0 lead.
Soon the Squires held a 9-4 lead, but Whitko refused to go down without a fight.
The Wildcats chipped away at the Manchester lead and got as close as 10-6, but Manchester would allow them to get not closer.
In the end, the Squires defeated the Wildcats 15-8 in the third game, and earned their second win of the season over Whitko.
"The girls never gave up," said West. "They came from behind to get this one. Hopefully this will give us a boost going into the County Tourney this weekend."
"We came out strong," said McCammon. "We got really excited about the win in the first game, and the girls thought that would carry them through the rest of the game. Late in the third game, they started to come back to reality, but then it was a little too late.
"We did a good job in the back court tonight, but it was the little things that killed us. There were so many tips that werer right there. All we had to do was put it back over the net, but we just didn't do it."
Although Whitko did not get the mark in the win column, several Wildcats put in impressive performances, especially Miller. Along with serving eight straight points in the first game, Miller had three other points with four aces throughout the game. She was all over the court, adding 11 assists, nine digs, two solo blocks and two assist blocks.
Jester and Hicks helped lead the Squires to the victory. Jester seved up nine points and two aces, while Hicks added 11 kills, seven blocks, seven points, one ace, and two stuffs.
"Jennifer Jester stepped in for Ann Harms, who is hurt, and played very well," said West. "Jessica Hicks had another outstanding night."
Manchester is 4-9 overall and 1-0 in Three Rivers Conference action, while Whitko falls to 0-9, 0-1 in the TRC.
